A remarkable self-published epic free verse poem that covers a vast landscape of late Victorian-American social and cultural issues and situations. Included is a chapter in black dialect. The heroine of the work is "Millie Floss." Though not a brilliant copy, the book is genuinely scarce. Bascom was a Prohibition Party politician in Steuben County, New York. Probably there is much of local interest in this book. Quite remarkable. W145

His books (usually written under the pseudonym Barry Gray) were extremely popular through the Civil War era, but were quickly forgotten. His humor and observations seemed to lack the bite and originality that made for long-term loyalty and reputation. This particular work, however, contains some entertaining observations on the practice and content of popular publishing in the era. He served as U.S. Attorney General and Secretary of State under President Grover Cleveland, and in the latter position, briefly, under Cleveland's successor, William McKinley. As attorney general, Olney used injunctions against striking workers in the Pullman strike, setting a precedent, and advised the use of federal troops, when legal means failed to control the strikers. As secretary of state, he raised the status of America in the world by elevating U.S. diplomatic posts to the status of embassy. This book is a transcription of 'An address Delivered before the Alumni of Brown University.' NW63
