In-8, cartonnage marbré moderne, 160 p., frontispice. Edition originale.

Fascinating piece of depression-era Canadian monetary-reform ephemera. This 5.8" x 4.3" double-sided slip provides a backside application form to join the Free Economy League of Canada. The front side features a suggested sample of a Gesell Scientific Currency Note entitled "United Provinces of Canada Currency Note". The "One Dollar" note includes twelve boxes, representing each month in 1936. With the passing of each month this note was declared to be subject to a 1% demurrage stamp charge. Presumably the motivation behind such an instrument was to encourage spending during the depths of the Great Depression, just as negative interest rates of more recent times have similarly been aimed. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear. Impress your friends with this incredible shrinking currency! Book

Osman Nuri Ergin was the initiator of the studies regarding modern municipalities' studies and gave so many qualified books related to Ottoman-Turkish urbanism and municipalities' studies scientifically. He was also the first scholar who was one of the architectures of municipalities' studies and history of urbanism and education. His best known book in this field called "Mecelle-i Umûr-i Belediyye". The book is one of the main sources for the history of urbanism, especially for the history of Istanbul. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and other metropolitan cities of Turkey function on the bases of what he declared. Since he worked as an officer for the government during the World War I, the time of Abdulhamid II and at the time of the young Republic, he was one of the figures who know the cultural and social changes in Turkish society. During this cultural transformation, he played a role of bridge in between Ottoman culture and modern day Turkey with the help of some enlightened scholars. He had so many attempts to transform Ottoman Sufi culture to the next generations. To reach this goal, he wrote so many valuable books. Although he wrote books in the fields such as Sufi order, grammar, history of arts, literature, he was not able to publish all of his works in his life. This 'Maarif tarihi' [= History of education] is still the most comprehensive corpus on Ottoman / Turkish education and cultural history.

Half-leather. 8vo. VIII, 307, [1] pages. 23 cm. First edition. In German. Half-leather over boards, gilt lettering on spine. Title translates as: Samuel Holdheim: his Life and his Works: a Contribution to the Recent Reform Efforts in Judaism. Contains notes on the Hebrew texts of the Old Testament, together with a translation of the Book of Job, and a grammatical appendix. Rabbi Samuel Holdheim was a leader of the Reform movement in German Judaism early in the 19th century, considered a pioneer in modern Jewish homiletics. The author, Immanuel Heinrich Ritter, was a German rabbi; born March 13, 1825, in Ratibor, Prussian Silesia; died July 9, 1890, in Johannisbad, Bohemia. While studying at the gymnasium of his native town he received his Talmudic instruction under Rabbi Loewe. At the University of Breslau classical philology and history formed his special studies (Ph. D. 1849) . During an audience with the Cultusminister von Raumer in 1851, the latter gave the young candidate to understand that only baptism could entitle him to an appointment as professor at a college. Ritter thereupon accepted a position as teacher of religion and reader at the Berlin Reform congregation, becoming later assistant to the senior preacher of the temple, Samuel Holdheim. His first ten sermons were published as "Kanzelvorträge aus dem Gotteshause der Jüdischen Reformgemeinde" (Berlin, 1856) , which placed him at once among the foremost Jewish preachers of his time. In 1859 his "Beleuchtung der Wagner'schen Schrift, " published against "Das Judenthum und der Staat" by Wagner, member of the Prussian Diet, created a stir. Ritter's principal work was his "Geschichte der Jüdischen Reform, " in four parts (Berlin, 1858-1902) : I. "Mendelssohn und Lessing. " II. "David Friedländer. " III. "Samuel Holdheim. " IV. "Die Jüdische Reformgemeinde in Berlin" (edited by S. Samuel, rabbi in Ussen) . In the first part Ritter demonstrates that Moses Mendelssohn's lack of understanding of historical criticism concerning Judaism was one of the main reasons why his own children and many of his friends became apostates from the religion of their fathers. He further shows that Lessing had a better conception of Judaism than Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn's false view of revelation, a view which identifies Judaism with legalism, makes him a representative of conservatism and even of retrogression. (from the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) . Subjects: Reform Judaism - Germany - History -- 19th century. Holdheim, Samuel, 1806-1860. OCLC lists 13 copies worldwide. Front cover hinge starting. Covers lightly soiled. [= Darülfünûn: The focus of Ottoman cultural modernization]. This is a comprehensive book on the history of the modern university which emerged as part of the cultural modernization process that followed the Tanzimat reforms. It records and evaluates on basis of first-hand sources the stages of formation of the university from realisation of its concept until its institution as the University of Istanbul. It is the result of many years of research by Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. the formation of a European-type university represented a transformation in Ottoman cultural and educational life. in addition to building the university's legal, administrative and financial structures, it necessitated policy decisions on such subjects as the university model to be followed, the curricula and the faculty. The present work reviews the process extensively. It is comprised of three books laid out in two volumes. The first book examines the emergence of the idea of the modern university beginning from the period of the Tanzimat and its establishment after three attempts, and analyses its evolution in stages, until the 1933 university reform. the second book looks into the development of the Darülfünun in the light of evolving concepts and trends in cultural, social and scholarly life. As to the third book, it describes in detail the development of each of the Faculties of Science, Letters, Theology, Law and Medicine with respect to curricula, faculty, institutes affiliated, among other aspects of their activities.
