Jack London began corresponding with Morrell before his release from prison and drew much of Morrell’s experiences with astral projection during his brutal imprisonment for his 1915 novel. 185988899New York: Chas. W. Baker 1859. First Edition. Sewn pamphlet. Octavo; printed paper wrappers 8pp. Text printed in double columns. Old stains to covers and bottom margin throughout else Good and sound.

A pamphlet issued by authority of the American Industrial Association of which Hoxie a District judge and reform-minded philanthropist was Vice-President. Hoxie's rather toothless report regarding the "alarming increase of the necessitous poor" within the New York city limits distilled to its essence is that "something must be done." Of far greater interest is a brief postscript relating a meeting of New York's "sewing women" under the auspices of the Association where a plan was presented to supply a clean well-lit workroom supplied with new sewing machines at no.10 Fourth Avenue in Manhattan for the use of seamstresses in distress. The presentation was made by John Cooke a Methodist minister who in the best tradition of paternalistic condescension remarked addressing a room-full of seamstresses: "The greatest sufferers are the needle women. Unfortunately they have themselves invited the evil by preferring this mode of living to other avocations sic within their reach thus crowding the city labor market and by an unavoidable consequence cheapening labor." Cooke goes on to propose a solution whereby young working women would be transported out of the city and put into situations in "the country." The proposal for free sewing machines and a clean place to work was met with favor by the women's representatives. No mention is made of their reaction to the idea of voluntary exile to parts unknown. Chas. W. Baker unknown
192014043Kansas City: Burton Publishing Co 1920. First Edition. Small octavo 19cm. Cloth boards lettered in red and black; 184pp. Presentation copy warmly inscribed on front endpaper to UMWA President John L. Lewis: "To John L. Lewis Esq / I am with you heart and soul in any honest effort to better the condition of the heroic hardies who work under ground / R.D. Kathrens" dated 1920. Light wear and soil to boards; presentation leaf has been tipped-on to a stub; a few marginal marks in text possibly in Lewis's hand; Very Good. Publishes a series of letters from the author to Charles Schwab who at this time was President of Bethlehem Steel seeking Schwab's support in implementing a sort of "maximum wage" scheme in the United States. Kathrens's letters grow increasingly indignant as Schwab steadfastly ignores his requests for the courtesy of a reply: ".it is hardly consistent with the civilities--as we understand them west of the Alleghenies--to shoo me away or send me to the back door or require me to deal with the servants." Kathrens professes his own sanity and good judgment frequently enough that our sympathies fall firmly on the side of Mr. Schwab. Includes a full reprint of Kathrens' earlier effort The Menace of the Millionaire and reprints other letters to and from Samuel Untermeyer and George W. Perkins. Burton Publishing Co unknown books
189234668Baltimore: Shaw Bros. Print 1892. First Edition. Small 12mo 15.5cm.; publisher's olive printed wrappers; 19pp. Previous owner has stitched the wrappers to textblock though the upper cover has since separated the stock rather brittle from age and poor quality with a few tiny chips and shallow losses along extremities. Still a Good unfaded copy contents in fine condition. Paper read by the Warden of the Western State Penitentiary in Pennsylvania. This printed version appears to be unrecorded though we do find mention of it in an issue of The Journal of Prison Discipline and Philanthropy from the same year. Wright blames the increase in crime in the United States to the arrival of "unworthy and undesirable immigrants" and argues that the answer is "sterner and more repressive lines" in prison discipline as a deterrant. 191936908New York December 11 1919. 1919. Very good. - Over 30 words typed on his 6 inch high by 8 inch wide buff "Free Synagogue / New York" stationery. Stephen Samuel Wise is pleased to accept American impresario and lecture agent James B. Pond's invitation to serve on the committee welcoming Maurice Maeterlinck to America. Wise writes "I accept with much pleasure your kind invitation to serve as a member of the Honorary Reception Committee." Signed "Stephen S. Wise". Folded for mailing with a small piece out from the top left corner. Very good.
Born in Budapest Stephen Samuel Wise 1874-1949 emigrated to the US when his father accepted service as rabbi of Brooklyn's Congregation Baith Israel Anshei Emes. After completing his studies at Columbia University Wise pursued rabbinical studies under several noted rabbis of the era including Richard J.H. Gottheil Kohut Gersoni Joff and Margolis. He was appointed assistant rabbi of NYC's Congregation B'nai Jeshurun becoming the Congregation's senior rabbi later that year. Taking over as rabbi of Portland Oregon's Congregation Beth Israel he attacked many of the social and political ills facing the country. He soon broke with the traditional reform movement and established his "Free Synagogue" in 1907 launching a movement. Wise was an early supporter of Zionism and laid the groundwork for what became the Zionist Organization of America and served as president of the American Jewish Congress. His good friend Albert Einstein profoundly praised him in a tribute that Einstein presented at the celebration of Wise' 60th birthday. In 1914 Wise co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People NAACP. Wise early on saw the threat posed by Hitler's rise in Germany and fought to shape U.S. public opinion against the growing German threat leading efforts for a Jewish Boycott of Germany and the creation of the World Jewish Congress.
James B. Pond the American impresario and lecture agent who headed the J.B. Pond Lyceum Bureau brought the great Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck to America for a series of lectures. The first lecture took place at Carnegie hall on January 2nd 1920. Unfortunately Maeterlinck failed to carry out his intention to lecture in English because of his labored "phonetic" English. He declared his intention to continue his lectures in French and have the translation read by another person. As a result the lecture tour was a failure and lawsuits ensued on both sides.
