This is a comprehensive book on the history of the modern university which emerged as part of the cultural modernization process that followed the Tanzimat reforms. It records and evaluates on basis of first-hand sources the stages of formation of the university from realisation of its concept until its institution as the University of Istanbul. It is the result of many years of research by Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu. the formation of a European-type university represented a transformation in Ottoman cultural and educational life. in addition to building the university's legal, administrative and financial structures, it necessitated policy decisions on such subjects as the university model to be followed, the curricula and the faculty. The present work reviews the process extensively. It is comprised of three books laid out in two volumes. The first book examines the emergence of the idea of the modern university beginning from the period of the Tanzimat and its establishment after three attempts, and analyses its evolution in stages, until the 1933 university reform. the second book looks into the development of the Darülfünun in the light of evolving concepts and trends in cultural, social and scholarly life. As to the third book, it describes in detail the development of each of the Faculties of Science, Letters, Theology, Law and Medicine with respect to curricula, faculty, institutes affiliated, among other aspects of their activities. Petit manque de cuir à la coiffe du 1er volume, également léger manque de cuir à la coiffe du second volume ainsi qu'en queue, coins légèrement émoussés. L'auteur, historien ecclésiastique, issu d'une famille noble de Normandie. Exemplaire bien conforme à la présentation qu'en fait son auteur quant aux divisions de l'ouvrage, savoir L'Histoire ecclésiastique du XVIe siècle se partage naturellement en 4 parties : La 1ere comprend ce qui s'est passé depuis le commencement du siècle jusqu'au schisme de Luther, qui s'est élevé en 1417. On y rapporte ce qui s'est fait en France et à Rome touchant la Pragmatique et le Concordat et l'histoire des Conciles de Pise et de Latran. La seconde partie contient l'histoire de la naissance et du progrès du Schisme de Luther et des sectes qu'il a produites, jusqu'à la convocation du Concile de Trente. On y représente les troubles excités en Allemagne au sujet de la religion, les assemblées, les conférences, les confessions de foi, les édits, les disputes et les écrits faits sur cette matière, tant par les Catholiques que par les Sectaires. L'origine de l'Hérésie des Sacramentaires et les contestations qu'ils eurent avec Luther et ses disciples. La toisième partie contient une ample Histoire du Concile de Trente et des choses qui se sont passées en Europe touchant la Religion depuis la convocation de ce Concile jusqu'à la fin, c'est à dire jusqu'en 1564. Il y aura un chapitre particulier destiné pour l'histoire de la Révolution d' Angleterre. La dernière partie contiendra la relation de ce qui s'est passé depuis la tenue du Concile de Trente jusqu'à la fin du siècle. Les troubles de la France et de la Hollande, auxquels la religion a servi de prétexte, en seront le principal sujet. Bel exemplaire malgré les défauts signalés, particulièrement intéressant pour toute l'histoire de la Réforme
