His books (usually written under the pseudonym Barry Gray) were extremely popular through the Civil War era, but were quickly forgotten. His humor and observations seemed to lack the bite and originality that made for long-term loyalty and reputation. This particular work, however, contains some entertaining observations on the practice and content of popular publishing in the era.
