Bound in black quarter leather with 5 raised bands to the spine. There is gilt embossed lettering and small decorative designs between the bands. Marbled boards and end papers. Numerous charts and tables throughout support the text. Text in French. Volume XXV - complete in its own right. There is light rubbing to the board corners and edges. There is some splitting to the front inner hinge between the half title page and title page revealing the cords and the half title page is a little loose. The front board remains firm and attached. There is a little rubbing to the head of the title page and a little staining to the head of the rear blank pages. A little normal age toning to the page periphery as expected for a book of this age. Pierre François Tardieu 1711–1771 belonged to a family of cartographers and engravers of the mid- to late-18th and early-19th centuries. He was a highly regarded map engraver during his lifetime enjoying the patronage of Alexander von Humboldt and the respect of his colleagues. He engraved several maps of the Americas including Virginia and the southeast coast Canada the northeastern United States as well as several maps of European and American cities. . Première édition. He took part in the debate on the biology and classification of the platypus. In 1803 he grouped both the platypus and echidna in a new classificatory taxon which he named Monotremata.
