Italian artist Brunelleschi moved to fin-de-siècle Paris where he worked as an artist illustrator and fashion designer. He designed sets and costumes for Folies Bergère in the 1920s including for Josephine Baker and for the Scala in Milan and the Roxy Theater in New York; according to Jane Merrill "his style was opulent yet humorous and light" 152. Among his known specialties was 18th-century Venetian styles and "refined coloring" both on their best display in this work. 2 volumes 10.5'' x 8'' each. Original cream pictorial wrappers with French flaps. In original cream paper slipcase. Illustrated by Brunelleschi with 32 full-page color plates and 79 black-and-white in-text images. 4 346 4; 4 338 6 pages. One of 3000 copies. Slipcase with moderate wear and bumping still intact. Acquaforte misure: mm 237 x 176 Pittore e incisore italiano. Dopo una prima formazione presso il collegio dei Barnabiti di Moncalieri si iscrisse alla facoltà di ingegneria (Pavia e Padova) esercitando tuttavia la professione per poco tempo. Sin da giovane era affascinato dal mondo dall'arte tanto da trasferirsi a Milano, divenuto sodale del pittore Stefano Bersani (Melegnano 1872 – Lora, 1914) ne condivise lo studio. Si interessò sia alla pittura che all'incisione all'acquaforte realizzando circa 650 lastre con scorci architettonici ma anche paesaggi. Espose le sue opere, acqueforti e dipinti, in quasi tutte le biennali di Brera e di Venezia, ma anche a Roma, Buenos Aires, Barcellona, Atene e Monaco. Il re Leopoldo I del Belgio fu un suo appassionato collezionista. Nel 1910 fondò con Adolfo De Carolis, Vico Viganò ed altri l’Associazione italiana Acquafortisti ed Incisori che segnò in Italia il ritorno dell’arte incisoria. Dal 1942 si trasferisce sul Lago d'Orta traendo da quei luoghi la maggior parte dei suoi soggetti. Di notevole interesse è anche il lavoro compiuto come fotografo fin dalla fine dell'800. Questa lastra è un esempio dell'abilità con cui l'autore era in grado di calibrare le morsure per ottenere giochi di luce creati con un segno profondo e deciso. Davanti ad un alto tronco dai rami spogli si erge a figura stante la sagoma di una pastore avvolto quasi totalmente dall'ombra dell'albero, i due elementi sono fusi in un unico profilo. Solo il braccio destro è illuminato, riflette il bianco della manica della camicia, vediamo che la mano poggia su un bastone. Intorno si muove il suo gregge di pecore colto a brucare l'erba. Un basso muro divide questa zona dallo sfondo dove tra una ricca vegetazione si riconoscono i tetti e i profili delle case che occupano un'altura e da cui spiccano un campanile e una cupola. In basso, oltre l'inciso a matita: Casanova Carlo/1915. Impressione eccellente su carta color avorio con effetto di velatura di fondo. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Ampi margini oltre la battuta del rame. Nel margine inferiore bianco timbro a secco della Associazione Italiana Acquafortisti ed Incisori, Milano. Bibliografia: A.
