Alongside details of his complicated and elaborate affairs with women the Italian adventurer discusses his brief careers as a clergyman and musician his attempts at professional gambling and his imprisonment. Candid about his faults and intentions as well as his wins and losses this entertaining set also provides insights into the customs and norms of European life during the eighteenth century. From the library of Iain Finlayson who was a Scottish writer and journalist best known for his biographies of James Boswell and Robert Browning. Nouvelle édition, considérablement augmentée, de cette importante relation de voyage consacrée à la Corse, à l'Italie et à la Tunisie, composée en français. La première édition (1774) est une brochure de 142 pages. L'auteur, le comte Maximilian Joseph von Lamberg (1729-1792) avait été chambellan de Frédéric le Grand. Homme des Lumières, doté d'une culture encyclopédique, philosophique comme scientifique il était en relation avec les grands esprits européens de son temps, David Hume, d'Alembert, Voltaire, Haller, Casanova, Algarotti… En 1769, il quitta son poste pour effectuer un vaste périple de trois ans en Corse, en Italie et à Tunis, qu'il relate dans cet ouvrage. Une importante partie du premier volume est consacré à la Corse: "Récit de voyage peu de temps après l'annexion de l'île. Il raconte son voyage en bateau de Livourne à Bastia puis son séjour chez le comte de Marbeuf. Il fait un rappel de l'annexion et s'attarde sur le personnage de Pascal Paoli et son frère Clément. Il établit un tableau de la Corse et de ses habitants en 1774, évoque les richesses de l'île et les traits de caractère de sa population : la sobriété, le goût de la vengeance, les superstitions..."
