New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. [6], 68, [6] ., b/w plates. The Silivri Saga. With the years, memories tend to become like islands in the ever encroaching sea of life, some sleeping peacefully, with wavlets breaking languidly on their shores, others vivid; all these help to revitalise the more dormant recollections. Thrace the mysterious, an almost unknown region, is a natural land bridge traversed by countless migrations as well as warlike groups: Persians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Huns, Byzantines, Crusaders, Ottomans and lastly, Bulgarian Turks. Thrace is the setting for the historic episodes and the author's recollections in this, her ninth published book.

The subject matter of the volume is the former Church of Saint Sophia, today's Ayasofya Museum built by Justinian the Great in 532-37. After it was built, for many centuries both Christians and Moslems believed that it was not the talent, experience and courage of its builders but the hand of God that must have made such a monument possible. Scholars regard the building as a unique synthesis of the architectural traditions which existed in the sixth-century Byzantine world. None of the master architects of the Byzantine Empire nor those of the West would dare to repeat its plan during the following centuries. St Sophia witnessed the golden days of Constantinople, its suffering at the hands of the soldiers of the Fourth Crusade, its Palaiologos revival and its fall to the Ottoman Turks. In a single day the ringing of its bells were replaced by the call of 'muezzins'. After Constantinople was turned into the capital of the Ottoman Empire the monument became a source of legends and stories for Moslem writers. Its plan and size served as a source of inspiration and challenge for the Ottoman architects. The book covers the early history of Byzantium and Constantinople, the first and second churches of Saint Sophia which were built on the same spot, the Nika (Victory) Riots and construction of present-day building and its history first as a mosque and later as a museum. The last part of the volume deals with its surviving mosaics and includes pictures of all of them. The text is supplemented with plans and drawings of the Fossatis who restored the monument in the nineteenth century.
New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Oblong large 8vo. (23 x 23 cm). In English. 64 p., 60 color plates. "This small mosque, which was completed in 1561 for Rüstem Pasa, a grand vizier of Süleyman the Magnificent, houses one of the richest collection of underglaze polychrome Iznik tile revetments in Istanbul. The revetment tiles in the Mosque of Rüstem Pasa are generally acknowledged as an outstanding example of the unique richness and superb artistic achievement characteristic of the era of Süleyman the Magnificent. Representing an ostentatious culmination of centuries of evolution in the art of ceramics and tiles, the Rüstem Pasa tile revetments also reflect the perfection of ceramic art at a particular stage of its development. Their lavish employment in this monument may show that Sinan, Sultan Süleyman's chief architect who built the mosque, had not yet decided how to use this new medium in architecture. In his other monuments, he appeared to use underglaze polychrome tiles more economically. The unusual number of motifs encountered in the mosque also points out that neither the decorators nor the architect had decided what designs to favor.".
