New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (31 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [xxvi], 168 p., b/w and color ills. Constantinople, 1918.= Konstantiniyye, 1918. Introducttion by Ali Serim. In this book you will see a city, which was Capital to empires during its poorest days. Once there was greatness and glory as in the drawings of Melchior Lorichs. The Ottoman naval defeat at Lepanto in 1571 or for some other people the failure of the second siege of Vienna in 1683 was the beginning of the decline. The Empire was effectively ended by the World War I (WWI) and those concerned were not able to preserve the city in the appropriate form it deserved. I purchased the album containing these pictures a decade ago. It is understood that an mysterious French Officer who came to Constantinople during the occupation of the city by Allied Forces at the end of WWI in 1918. He took photographs of buildings and people capturing interesting scenes from social life documented the need for extensive restoration of the old city.

"The Surname-i Hümayun literally translates into Imperial Festival Book, and were albums that commemorated celebrations in the Ottoman Empire in pictorial and textual detail. Such celebrations included mainly imperial weddings and circumcision festivals. These albums were commissioned by the Ottoman Imperial family, usually by the Sultan presiding at the time. The Surname recounts the festivities in order of when the events took place, which includes in detail processions, grand entrance of the Sultan, feasts, entertainers, musicians, dancers, gift giving, firework displays, circumcision and wedding ceremonies. Although many of the Surnames were made to celebrate circumcisions of Ottoman Princes, the first Surname was commissioned in 1524 for a wedding ceremony. This Surname-I Hümayun was commissioned for a circumcision festival, as well it was to commemorate Sultan Murad III's son Prince Mehmed. This festival lasted fifty-two days and was probably one of the most elaborate and grandiose festival the Ottomans had ever held, and it was well documented. The organization of this Surname was done chronologically, each day documented in order with what occurred. The book was created by an author named 'Intizami' which is a pen-name, and the illustrations were done mainly by court artists.".

The photograph albums of Yildiz Palace entirely given to Istanbul University in 1924 at the behest of Ataturk are among the world's most remarkable photography collections. Perspectives of the photographers of that period have been reflected while in the selection of photographs for "Yadigar-i Istanbul". Those who see the "Yadigar-i Istanbul photos will realize the early beauties of Istanbul as well as the great changes it has undergone. As a result of the study made on 911 albums containing 35.535 photographs and on the photographers of the albums, almost 370 photographer names emerged.
