Narrating the development and disappearance of the world's first war machine, this book reminds readers that much of the power of ancient empires was two-wheeled and horse-driven. Harnessed to other historians' broad-spectrum research on the causes of the end of the Bronze Age, Cotterell argues that, much like the later introduction of the stirrup, chariot technology dramatically recast battlefield strategy across the ancient world. Egyptians employed chariots as all-purpose fighting machines, while Roman chariots were more ceremonial, and Indian troops used theirs as archery platforms; Chinese engineers developed more efficient harnesses, permitting heavier cars. The author's comparative approach broadens the appeal of what would otherwise seem a narrow topic, but this account nevertheless behaves as a detailed military history. Particularly interesting for such scholarship, the author also discusses the chariot as a vehicle for modern popular culture; it aims to dispel the notion that chariots were simply horse-pulled tanks. Suprisingly few archaelogical excavations have taken place for various reasons and most of the serious work conducted by scientists devoted to the issue of Istanbul's subterranean features has been left incomplete. Archeologists, eho found the acquisition of sponsorship easy for excavations and research conducted on the historical sites of the Hittites, Urartus, Sumerians, and Lycians, appear to have faced great financial difficulties when it came to exploring Istanbul's hidden depths. Consequently, we do not really have a good account of what is hidden in the subterranean world of the city. Despite the hundreds of different resources available to us, somehow they are never quite sufficient enough to guide us to that world as we follow the footsteps of history; this is mainly due to the continual construction work that changes the layout with each passing day. Even street names change regularly and every day more underpasses, overpasses, bridges, and viaducts are being constructed in the city. This means, therefore, it is inevitable that researchers will lose these traces of history and the hope they have of finding valuable information. This has been my experience and I decided to write this book in order to help others find their path and not endure the difficult experiences I have encountered. Istanbul is truly a boundless ocean. This is not a history book merely telling the story of Istanbul. We could call it a tribute to the remains of the many civilisations that have been sleeping under the city for many centuries.".

New English Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In English. 273 p. Ills. This book has been written at the request of many friends of Robert College. It embodies a history of the College from its foundation to the close of its fortieth year, 1903. I have chosen to make it a record of personal recollections, because this seemed to be the only way in which I could write freely of events and personalities as they appeared to me at the time, without compromising the present administration of the College or making it responsible in any way for my opinions or actions. It has been my purpose to make it as far as possible a history of the College, but the picture of a college in Constantinople during these years could not be drawn without a background of incidents, personalities and events, such as would have no place in the story of a college in America. On the other hand, it did not seem wise to make the background more attractive than the picture, or even to set the latter in the frame of a detailed history of the Turkish Empire. The Introduction is a review of the events of the last fifty years which have led to the recent revolution in Constantinople.
