Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue]. The photographs collected constituted the kernel of the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.

"The publication offers its readers an opportunity to get acquainted with Istanbul - whether they be its resident or a tourist, as it presents the suppressed histories of the Ottoman era and Republican Turkey by looking at Istanbul from the lens of a tour guide. The places we pass by or visit on a daily basis are, inevitably, places with certain histories. These are mostly histories of appropriation and violation, injustice and power, but at times also histories of struggle. A City That Remembers sheds light on this rather 'unofficial' version of Istanbul's history through a total of 17 spaces, squares and buildings.".

Watercolours by Amadeo Count Preziosi, (1816-1882). It's prepared for the first exhibition on Count Amadeo Preziosi, (1816-1882) in Great Britain. "This is the first exhibition of the work of Amadeo Preziosi to be held in this ccountry. It does not cclaim to be definitive, but it centered on the Museum's substantial holdings and augmented by loans from collections in Great Britain. Preziosi's name is now little known except to specialists, but in the period 1840-70 he was by far the most reknowned artist in Constantinople. He was only retrieved from the critical neglect into which he had fallen in the 20th century by Rodney Searight who began to appreciate his importance while building up his unsurpassed collection of views of the Near and Middle East. Indeed, it is fitting that the exhibition honours not only Preziosi himself but also Rodney Searight, pioneer of the study of this field, whose collection the Museum is raising funds to acquire. It is hoped that the enthusiasm Preziosi's contemporaries felt foe his lively and colourful studies of a now vanished way of life will be appreciated by visitors to the exhibition". (From the Kaufmann's preface).
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 21 cm). In English and Turkish. 194, [1] p. I have to confess, when I was given the pictures (apologies for not saying ''photographs'', never warmed to this notion) if this book to ''look'', first thing I thought of was a poem by Cemal Süreya, and the book of the same name, Göcebe, where he says Istanbul's minarets are ''lyrical'' and its bridges are ''dialectic'' and the crucial lines; ''You know, at whichever city I am / That is the capital of loneliness''. Süreya differentiates ''city'' from ''capital'' which is actually the city of Istanbul, where s/he becomes more lonely and plain. Just like the alienation, residue, and exceptional expressiveness of migration that makes us think of tales, awakens dreams, and burns like embers inside our bosoms which can also makes us shiver as we watch the pictures. Well, maybe we can not see the sentences of the poverty but as the words forming a lexicon, every possible, ''echo'' (each ''word'') reflects towards our gaze. Reflecting on the dialectic of the 'bridges' Cemal Süreya mentions, just as Ece Ayhan says (Ece's name has to be mentioned, otherwise cemal would be offended, I am sure) the ''arab'' (negative) of the picture, is formed as the background.
