New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. [xxxi], 415 p., ills. Salih Ozbaran focuses on a subject which has not been studied fully and accurately so far, i.e., the Ottoman expansion towards the Indian Ocean including the imperial conquests, organizations, exploitation of southern Arab lands and coastal African ports. He also examines the confrontations with native rulers, their communal organizations and the Portuguese seaborne forces in the 16th century. Ozbaran comes to the following should not be regarded as a 'linear process of development'; they did not practice the fief (timar) system in the southern provinces, but the method of tax-farming (iltizam) was developed in which yearly and quarterly paid officals and soldiers played an important role. He also empasizes that the Ottomans were not fully organized in keeping the permanent seamen and naval organizations in the provinces facing the Indian Ocean although they had strongholds in towns and in country firtresses with support of firearms.

Üsküdar in engravings.= Gravürlerde Üsküdar. "Most of Western voyagers and artists produced their engravings in Istanbul. Between Istanbul engravings those of Üsküdar have a special place. Üsküdar was the break point for tthe Eastern voyagers going to the west and westerns voyagers going to Jerusalem or Asia. It was a place to see its own beauties witth the possibility to see the other side also and it became a zone for the engraving masters. We prepared a very beautiful exhibition following this art and history. During five hundred years since the beginning of the engraving until our days, we prepared some documents of engraving which brought to us the daily life of Üsküdar in ancient times and we collected them by the title of Üsküdar. Since the publication of our earlier study; 'Orientalism and Turkey', we have been exploring the ramifications of Orientalism in the Ottoman capital of Istanbul itself, or as it was generally known in the nineteenth and early twentieth century: Constantinople. The present study, documented by both visual and written records, including memories, reveals not only the ways in which Istanbul was perceived and portrayed by European artists in the nineteenth century, but it also tries to represent the contemporary city as it truly lived and breathed. In the present work, the reader will discover the identity of Western artists whose works pictorially limned the Ottoman capital, their favorite subjects ¿the harem, the bath, the coffeehouse, and the slave market- and the nature of their interpretation of these subjects.

One of 1000 copies. "... The old "La Societa Operaia" and the new "Galatasaraylilar Yurdu" [i.e. Dormitory of Galatasaray Lycee] in Beyoglu, Pera started to host three art exhibitions; the first two would be held in the spring of 1916 and 1917, and the last one, which hosted paintings about the war - what would later become known as the Sisli Studio - was held in late 1917 before being brought to Vienna. The Vienna exhibition hosted 20 artists; Zekai Pasha, who had exhibited only one work in the late 1917 exhibition, "Bir Konak Dahili" [i.e. Interior of a Mansion] did not take part in the Vienna show, while the Prince Abdülmecid Efendi, the honorary president of the Society, who had not attended the 1917 exhibition, sent four paintings to Vienna. The opening of the Vienna exhibition was conducted by the Archduke himself. The exhibition, as Celal Esad pointed out, was well received by both Austrian visitors and the press. A poster was designed and the exhibition was accompanied with a German catalogue, Ausstellung Türkischer Maler [i.e. Exhibition of Turkish Painters]. This volume is an examination of the turbulent twenty-four years in which Constantinople, once splendid and celebrated, gradually disintegrated under its last rulers, who had inherited all the problems of an aging social system and possessed few of the talents needed to resolve them. The confrontations between Byzantium and the Western powers became increasingly important and form the major theme of Mr. Brand's study.

Byzantium in Popular Culture navigates through the eclectic presence of Byzantium in popular culture. Curated by Emir Alisik, the exhibition explores multiple and conflicting meanings of Byzantinism, and questions popular culture?s interaction with the Byzantine legacy. It scrutinizes a selection of motifs found in visual arts, literature, metal music, comics and graphic novels, video games, movies, and fashion representing Byzantium in popular culture. Emir Alisik and Gulru Tanman co-authors the introductory chapter to the catalogue accompanying ?What Byzantinism Is This in Istanbul!?: Byzantium in Popular Culture. The volume brings together the articles of 10 researchers who examine and interpret Byzantinism?s representations in various fields of art. The articles by Roland Betancourt, Felice Lifshitz, Brigitte Pitarakis, Sinan Ekim, Yagmur Karakaya, Elif Demirtiken, Jeremy J. Swist, Marco Fasolio, Haris Theodorelis-Rigas, and Emir Alisik discuss how Byzantinisms appearing in various domains of popular culture relate to the Byzantine history depending on the context in which those artworks are produced.
