New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 256 p., b/w and color ills. The new exhibition of the Yapi Kredi Culture Arts and Publishing (YKKSY) complex on Istiklal Street is a journey into the memory of a family of three generations of artists over hundred years. Originally from Bulgaria, the Hristoff family first came to Istanbul in 1923, and then immigrated to New York in 1963. The three generations of artists document Istanbul, starting with black and white photographs in the 1920s and 1930s. Peter Dimiter Hristoff was right in the midst of the first days of the Republic, and began collecting ephemera. This habit was continued by his son Dimiter Hristoff and grandson Peter, who is one of the curators of the "Memento Istanbul: Hristoff Family Archive" exhibition. "From Sofia to Paris, from Paris to California, from California to New York," Peter Hristoff, a New York based artist, educator and co-curator of the exhibition says. His great grandfather, an orphan born in the mid 1800s, he says, was raised by a farmer family who called him 'garden boy'... (Source: TRT World).
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). Color and b/w ills. 466 p. "In 1492, the Spanish monarchs expelled tens of thousands of Sephardic Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and other territories. Most Sephardim headed eastward and settled in Ottoman lands, where their language, known as Judeo-Spanish, survived and thrived for centuries. This book is the result of fieldwork in the Jewish community of Istanbul. It provides a historical and modern sociolinguistic account of the survival of the Judeo-Spanish dialect after centuries of fragmentation, French bilingualism, "Turkish only" language policies, emigration, and globalization. This work analyzes social patterns on the acquisition and use of Judeo-Spanish in the community as well as linguistic change throughout different generations of Istanbulite Sephardim. Focusing on several grammatical features, these data demonstrate that bilingualism with Turkish and reduced linguistic spaces promote language change. In a world where linguistic diversity is rapidly shrinking, the survival and future of Judeo-Spanish is a testament to the close bond between language, culture, community, and identity".

Edwards family was an English Levantine family who arrived in Constantinople after the Crimean war (1853). They had a Baker Shop in Pera. The baker shops were established by the English Baker family who arrived in Constantinople after the Crimean war (1853), and the English immigrant families of Edwards and Binns were also involved with these shops. These latter 2 families opened businesses in different sectors and neigbourhoods of Istanbul, however with time these businesses were either transferred to the Bakers or they merged through partnership with them. The founder of the Baker shops, George Baker was at that time already operating a substantial business in London. Soon after George Baker arrived in Istanbul, he formed a partnership with the Hayden family and together they opened two shops, one on the Grand Rue de Pera, at where Anadolu Han now stands, the other in nearby Galata, opposite Serdar Ekrem Street, on the corner looking out to the Galata tower. This partnership established in the 1860s remained firm till the end of the 1870s. With the end of this decade, Hayden and Baker went their own way, and Hayden retained these shops and Baker opened new retail outlets. One of these shops was again by the Galata tower, at Sahdegirmeni Street, and the other was next to the former Kanzuch pharmacy [Austrian run, in Pera?]. Soon after this first shop on the Grand Rue de Pera, George Baker opened his second shop where Sümerbank [central Pera, near the British Consulate] now stands. In these shops the Bakers sold a wide range of goods in including textiles, bedding, furniture and accessories. In addition to this they had by this time obtained the local representation of many foreign firms. A close friend of the Bakers, Cuthbert Evelyn Binns, became the manager of the Baker shops after WWI. The other English Levantine family of Edwards family firm, Edwards and Sons, merged with the G. & A. Baker company. At this time C.E. Binns was still the general manager, and W.G.M. Edwards continued his career as a member of the board of directors. Records show that between 1924-1925 W.G.M. Edwards continued his association with the local British Chamber of Commerce and in 1930 was elected as its president... (Source: Behzat Üsdiken with Levantineheritage translation). Photographs of the Rumeli Shore of the Bosphorus from the mid-XIXth to the XXth century.= Konstantiniyye'den Istanbul'a. XIX. yüzyil ortalarindan XX. yüzyila Bogaziçi'nin Rumeli Yakasi fotograflari. [Exhibition catalogue]. The exhibition showcased works by masters of photography, who practiced their art in Istanbul from the end of the XIXth to the early years of the XXth century. New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (32 x 22 cm). In English. 375 p., color and b/w ills. "The rose is known and loved by the entire world. Smelled by sovereigns, this flower is the symbol of love, of belief and of beauty. It is the richest inspiration for all arts, the sultan of gardens and poetry and the eternal yearning of the nightingale. From the beginning of civilization the rose has adorned the lives of man. For thousands of years countless cultures have turned to the rose as a way of expression, they have held on to it, interpreted it, and enjoyed its beauty while enduring its thorns. Süleyman the Magnificent wrote poetry using the pseudonym Muhibbî and understanding the value of this special flower he placed it on the emerald throne of the meadow. 'The rose sits on the emerald throne and becomes a sultan It gathers all the sweet basil to commence the council.' Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar said of the rose, "The dream of eternity fitted into a moment." This book is written to provide a stroll into the imaginary and actual rose garden of humanity and enable the gathering of a most colourful bunch. Those who turn the pages will relish the rosy world of nature and roses, the history of the rose, the name of the rose and the smell and taste of roses; the rose in art and rosy pictures, rosy tiles and rosy fabrics, rosy carpets, rosy stones and rosy woods, rosy jewellery and rosy glass, the rose in poetry and the rose in music, wearing the rose and the rose gardens of our lives. With this book the writer of the TULIP book, Gül Irepoglu has taken a new look at the ROSE and embraced it.".
