The exhibition 'Coulisse: Hagop Ayvaz, A Chronicler of Theater' has been brought to life by the guidance of Hrant Dink Foundation with the collaboration of the Theatre Foundation of Turkey and Yapi Kredi Culture, Arts and Publishing with the support of the Chrest Foundation, Consulate General of the Kingdom of Netherlands, the French Embassy and Civil Rights Defenders will be open to visitors from 15th of December 2020 to 21st of February 2021. The exhibition will be welcoming visitors from 15th of December 2020 until 21st of February 2021 has been prepared by the guidance of Hrant Dink Foundation with the collaboration of the Theatre Foundation of Turkey and Yapi Kredi Culture, Arts and Publishing begins with the personal theatre archive of an Istanbulite theater player and publisher Hagop Ayvaz (1911-2006), to shed light on theater history of Turkey within the context of collective memory, identity and space. After the death of Hagop Ayvaz in 2006, the archive was donated to the Agos newspaper and then to Hrant Dink Foundation, composed of nearly 600 manuscripts and printed texts, over 500 periodicals, magazines and brochures in Armenian and Turkish languages, magazines and brochures, as well as about 12 thousand visual materials including photographs, posters, caricatures, clippings, invitations, drawings and postcards. In 2019, with the donation of some of the personal belongings of Ayvaz, the awards he has received, and a complete collection of the 1104 issues of "Kulis", the culture and arts magazine in Armenian language he has published from 1946 to 1996 to Hrant Dink Foundation, the archive was further completed. Over the years, Hrant Dink Foundation created a catalogue for the archive and digitalized it, and this online archive will be to researchers simultaneously with the opening of the "Coulisse: Hagop Ayvaz, A Chronicler of Theater" exhibition. Constituting the basis of the exhibition, the Hagop Ayvaz archive encompasses a wide range of original materials about theater players, companies and venues in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey remaining from the mid-19th century up until today. Hagop Ayvaz used the words "my paradise" to describe his study room composed of books, magazines, posters and photographs that he had collected since his youth; this tender metaphor also gives us hints about the possible links that can be established between his passion, namely theater, archives and collective memory. The exhibition offers a selection of the photographs, magazines, manuscripts and printed texts from the archive, divided into three main parts. The first part presents the theater production and activities in Istanbul in Armenian, in parallel to the lifetime of Hagop Ayvaz, a devotee of theater since his youth-from being a walker on to a director, from being a columnist to a publisher. The second part touchs upon the impact of the "Kulis" magazine within and outside of Turkey published by Ayvaz from 1946 to 1996, in line with the major artistic and political developments within this framework. The final section focuses various artists, companies, plays and venues which constituted the cornerstones of the theater history of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, inviting the visitors to explore the linkage between them all so as to rediscover the history of theater in Turkey. The catalogue which has the same name with the exhibition has also been prepared in both English and Turkish by Yapi Kredi Culture, Arts and Publishing, not only invites the visitors to the "coulisse" of Hagop Ayvaz's endeavors, but also allows the visitors to discover the theatre of history of Turkey from a pluralistic perspective. The exhibition reminds the visitors the place and importance of arts and culture in the culture of arts and culture in the culture of living together, the "coulisse" that was built up by devotion and sustained by commitment and solidarity.

New English Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In English. 160 p., color ills. Mosques of Istanbul including the mosques of Bursa and Edirne. The mosques of Istanbul represent the splendour of Islamic architecture. Their central domes, rising above the skyline of the city, convey both the ideals and ambitions of powerful Ottoman sultans and the brilliance of the architects who created them. This book places these buildings in their historical, religious and social context. It traces the evolution of the Ottoman mosque from smaal, fourteenth-century examples in the first Ottoman capitals, Bursa and Edirne to those built after the capture of Constantinople in 1453, and to the vast centralised structures commissioned by Suleyman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century. The daring experiments in space, light ans structure devised by Michelangelo's. Ottoman contemporary Mimar Sinan constitute a high point of the book, but the innovations of the Baroque and Neoclassical eras which followed are also fascinating.
Fine Fine English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 413 p., b/w ills. Sons of the conquerors: The rise of the Turkic world. A detailed portrait of the Turkic people explores events since World War I that have rendered the nation a vital NATO ally and the site of a secular Islamic democracy, tracing centuries of citizen ancestry to offer insight into how Turkish culture has significantly impacted history. By the co-author of Turkey Unveiled. 20,000 first printing. With the end of the Soviet Union began independence for a half-dozen Turkic countries, where Istanbul-based reporter Pope has made forays for the past 15 years, traveling in both presidential airliners and faltering taxis. Pope does not organize his trips chronologically, but, rather, according to what he believes are the seven collective characteristics of Turkic peoples. One is the "military vocation" epitomized by Turkey itself, whose military is regarded as the guardian of secularism; a concomitant trait is predilection for the political strongman. None of the new Turkic states is a liberal democracy, and none less so than Turkmenistan, home to a shambolic personality cult devoted to its dictator. Pope's talks with officials are always revelatory of local and international politics, but readers will most value his perceptiveness about Turkic culture when he, speaking fluent Turkish, meets ordinary people. Some of these are Uygurs, the Turkic minority suppressed by communist China, and others are part of the Turkic diaspora in Europe and America. A sensitive presentation of how Turks view themselves and their future.

[= Bosporus adventure: Istanbul (Constantinople) Woman's College, 1871-1924]. Translated by Seyman Akin. A Bosporus Adventure is a history of the Woman's College at Constantinople by a former president. Mary Mills Patrick was born 10 March 1850 in Canterbury, New Hampshire to John & Harriet (White) Patrick. She graduated from the Lyons Collegiate Institute in Lyons, Iowa, in 1869. In 1871, by appointment of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, she became a teacher in a mission school in Erzurum. In her four years there Patrick learned ancient and modern Armenian. In 1875 she was transferred to the American High School for Girls in Üsküdar, and she became principal of the school in 1889. During her summers she lived in Greek villages. She thus was able to add Greek and Turkish to her repertoire of languages. After a study furlough in the United States she received a master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1890. In that year, after much planning and the securing of a charter from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the American High School became the American College for Girls at Constantinople, later known as Constantinople Woman's College. Patrick served as president of the college from its opening. Her summer studies at the Universities of Heidelberg, Zürich, Berlin, Leipzig, Paris, and Oxford resulted in a Ph.D. from the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 1897. Her dissertation was published in 1899 as Sextus Empiricus and Greek Scepticism. When the college was destroyed by fire in 1905, a new site was acquired in Arnavutköyü on the European side of the Bosporus. A new charter in 1908 ended the college's ties to the mission board, and in 1914 the new campus was occupied. Patrick kept the school open through the Balkan Wars, the Turkish revolution, and World War I, and through those changes it evolved from a school primarily for minority Greek, Armenian, and Bulgarian Christian women into a leading centre of higher education for Turkish women. She remained president until her retirement in 1924, after which she moved back to the United States. The American College for Girls later affiliated with nearby Robert College for men. Patrick's books include Sappho and the Island of Lesbos (1912); The Greek Skeptics (1929); Under Five Sultans (1929), an autobiography; and A Bosporus Adventure (1934), a history of the college.

Journey to the center of the East, 1850-1950. 100 years of travelers in Istanbul from Pierre de Gigord Collection.= Dogu'nun merkezine seyahat, 1850-1950. Pierre de Gigord Koleksiyonu'ndan Istanbul'da gezginlerin 100 yili. [Exhibition catalogue]. Coordinated by Zeynep Ögel, Erkan Bora, Gülru Tanman. This exhibition tells the tale of the Istanbul-centred travels of curious Westerners, who ventured out to the East from the 18th century onwards. Geographers, archaeologists, linguists, architects, botanist and clergymen all travelled across the East from the late 18th until the mid-19th century researching their particular interests. After the Crimean War, the expedition-oriented travel that was so popular until the 1850s was replaced by a different kind of travel. The objective was no longer information gathering, but tourism. Based on materials selected from the vast collection of Pierre de Gigord, one of the leading collectors of Ottoman-era photographs and ephemera, this exhibition sheds light on the early years of mass tourism that replaced individual journeys of discovery and transformed travel culture.
