New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (28 x 21 cm). In English. 177, [3] p., b/w photos, 2 maps. Ara Güler's Istanbul. Foreword by Orhan Pamuk. Ara Güler's Istanbul is a unique record of daily life in the cultural capital of Turkey from the 1940s to the 1980s, captured by the award-winning photographer and accompanied by an evocative foreword by Orhan Pamuk, the first Turkish recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. As the crossroads between Europe and Asia, Istanbul has lived through several empires and has a character that is as many layered as its history something that Güler's photographs convey with great sensitivity. In these remarkable black-and-white images, the city's melancholy aesthetic oscillates between tradition and modernity. Both writer and photographer were born in Istanbul, and each in his youth held the ambition of becoming a painter. Here, each in his own way paints a picture of his home town and captures its very soul. Ara Güler is one of Turkey's indeed the world's greatest photographers. The Nobel Prize-winning Orhan Pamuk is Turkey's best-known writer.
New Turkish Paperback. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). Edition in Turkish. 144 p., b/w photos. Babil'den sonra yasayacagiz. [Album of photographs]. [TURKISH EDITION]. This book brings together the short stories Ara Güler penned during his early period, and his photographs. Güler is known internationally as a photographer and considered the most important representative of creative photography in Turkey, however, he is a relative unknown as a short story writer, and the various aspects of Güler the writer appear in breathtaking range in We Will Live After Babylon. This new edition of three simultaneously published volumes in Turkish, Armenian and English, brings together Güler's visual production with his texts, who appear to also take photographs through the medium of the short story, to form a "photograph-short story album". Güler thinks that his early period short stories have an important role in his ability to "capture meaningful moments and combine them in a narrative", and describes these 13 short stories as "a kind of photography". There is no doubt that Güler is a "man of the visual world" and We Will Live After Babylon is a solid proof of that.

New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English and Turkish. 236 p., 1 b/w portrait of Redhouse frontispiece, b/w ills. Sir James W. Redhouse: The making of a perfect orientalist? = Sir James W. Redhouse: Mükemmel bir dogubilimcinin öyküsü? (American Board Library Occasional Publications No: 1). First published in the Journal of the American Oriental Society in 1979, and now revised and updated, Carter Findley's "The Making of a Perfect Orientalist?" is a scrupulously researched biography of the enigmatic nineteenth-century Turkish language scholar James W. Redhouse. Primarily embodied in two major dictionaries-A Lexicon, English and Turkish (1861) and A Turkish and English Lexicon (1890)-Redhouse's work established a crucial base for the further development of English-Turkish lexicography. Unparalleled at the time, his contributions remain vital today, forming the core of a number of bilingual English-Turkish dictionaries which still bear the Redhouse name. A brief overview of the press that published Redhouse's lexicons, as well as the reminiscences of two editors who helped revise them in the twentieth century, round out this provocative study of the life of James Redhouse.

New English Paperback. 4to. (30 x 24 cm). In English. 285 p. Color and b/w ills. "This unique collection takes a fresh look at Orientalism by shifting its center from Europe to Ottoman Istanbul and thinking about art in terms of exchange, reciprocity, and comparative imperialisms. This new lens reveals the essential role of the Ottoman city and its patrons and artists in the dialogues that facilitated production, circulation, and consumption of British Orientalist cultures. In this volume, art works are conceptualized as traveling artifacts produced through localized interactions. World renowned scholars and curators analyze the diverse audiences for such art works and the range of differing contexts for their reception both in the 19th century and more recently. In this way, British art is put into a dynamic relationship with an historicized understanding of cultures of collecting and display during the formation of comparative modernities and also with the contemporary postcolonial creation of new national models of exhibition and education. Featuring stunning visuals, this book puts art history in the context of cultural, visual, and literary studies, challenging the orthodoxies of postcolonial theory with the materiality of multiple imperialisms and modernities to offer a new take on the collection, display, and consumption of Orientalist cultures.".

New English Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (24 x17 cm). In English. [xLiv], 223 p., ills., in English; [+] 144 p. facsimile of the BEO 350 Protocol Register in Ottoman script. The BEO 350 protocol register edited here is part of the Sublime Porte Archives series of the Prime Ministry Ottoman State Archives in Istanbul. The register covers a number of ceremonies held on various occasions from 1736 to 1808 and primarily concerned with accession ceremonies, funerals and, most of all, the reception of envoys. This edition of the BEO 350 is accompanied by an introduction, a synoptic list of ceremonies, appendices, and indexes. The introduction examines various aspects of Ottoman ceremonies, particularly those of a diplomatic nature, and includes a section on the gifts and offerings exchanged by the Ottoman administration and foreign envoys. As briefly discussed in the introduction, ceremonies contribute, albeit modestly, to the validation of a regime's political legitimacy and to its smooth functioning. When trying to determine the relationship between ceremonial rites and political power, the lofty symbolism of ceremonies needs to be interpreted with great care. Thus, detailed descriptions such as those found in protocol registers are extremely valuable, indeed indispensable, for a solid interpretation.
New Turkish Original bdg. HC. 4to. (28 x 20 cm). Edition in Turkish. 228 p., color and b/w ills. Islâm medeniyetinde bahçe sanati. [= The art of the Islamic garden]. Translated by Elif Dolanbay, Adem Yerinde. The Islamic garden is regarded as one of the highest forms of visual art in the civilization of Islam, and this guide explains these gardens' history and symbolism, and their connections to the Quran. The principal elements are water and shade; they are also characterized by the chahar-bagh: a four-fold pattern, constructed around a central pool or fountain, with four streams flowing toward the four corners of the earth. This design is aesthetically striking; however, a true appreciation of an Islamic garden is only complete with an understanding of the spiritual symbolism manifested in its design and planting. The significance of the gardens' layout and design are explored, as well as the geometry, hard landscaping, and architectural elements, allowing a deeper understanding of the gardens' beauty. Practical instructions include recommendations for suitable trees, shrubs, and flowers, and advice on creating an Islamic garden in cooler climates.
