Very Good French Original color copper engraving. Oblong folio. (26 x 36 cm). Description in French. Incendie du quartier de Pera a Constantinople, 9 Aôut 1839. Painted by Theodore Gudin, (1802-1880); Engraved by Joseph John Skelton, (1783-1871). Rare color engraved print. Shows 1839 fire in Pera area in Istanbul (probably that district is Kasimpasa which mostly mariners live in), and its chaos: hectic people have appeared on the roofs of the burning houses, law enforcement agencies are working, and the muezzin has been seen on balcony for 'selâ'. Jean Antoine Théodore Gudin was a French painter of the 19th century, born in Paris. He especially painted navy scenes, and was a pupil of Girodet-Trioson. Gudin was one of the first Peintres de la Marine, at the court of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III. Gudin died at Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1880. His daughter Henriette Gudin also became a marine painter. Skelton was an English engraver. He was brother of William Skelton, and became an engraver specialising in topographical and antiquarian subjects. Before 1819 he went to live at Oxford. Later Skelton settled in France. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1825; his name disappears from its lists in 1844. At Oxford he published Oxonia Antiqua Illustrata (1823); Antiquities of Oxfordshire, from drawings by F. Mackenzie (1823); Pietas Oxoniensis, or Records of Oxford Founders (1828); and Engraved Illustrations of Antient Arms and Armour from the Collection at Goodrich Court from the Drawings, and with the Descriptions of Dr. Meyrick, (2 volumes, 1830). He also engraved the heading to the Oxford almanacks for the years 1815 to 1831, from drawings by F. Mackenzie and C. Wild; and executed a set of fifty-six etchings of the antiquities of Bristol after H. O'Neill. (Source: Wikipedia).

February 24 - May 31, 2011. 500 copies were printed. Our struggle, conducted under the direction of Alm I las beginning in 1005, to see that the machines and items used in, and the documents and photographs pertaining to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory be returned to their rightful place, reached a positive conclusion in 2008, when these items were temporarily handed over to the Rezan Has Museum after being inventoried at the Museum for the History of Science and Technology in Islam. Following two years of restoration and conservation work, we held the first of a series of exhibitions about the Factory, titled "Like Moths to the Flame: The Ottoman Fire Brigades", in order to revive the spirit of the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory and to share with you t hi- important historical artifacts on their way back home. The "Like Moths to the Flame: the Ottoman Fire Brigad(-: features those indomitable heroes of the city of Istanbul, managed again and again to rise from the ashes. Heroes outfits, performers of daring acts, these brave characters fearir:ssly fought the fires that were Istanbul's greatest nightmare. Firei'vtj.i.t.(2rs, those voluntary soldiers of Istanbul, had their own unique culture, their own rally cries, attitudes, and sayings, their own characteristic relationships, and even veritable tradition of criminal incidents amongst their own, all of which provide insight into the street culture of the city of Istanbul, and the socio-cultural structure and state politics of the period. In addition to the artifacts and historical documents belonging to the Cibali Tobacco and Cigarette Factory, our exhibition also contains selected items from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Directorate of Libraries and Museum's Firefighting Museum Collection and the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation's Old Istanbul Photographs Collection. Numerous individuals worked together to make this exhibition happen, and to each of them we would like to express our thanks. First and foremost the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, but also the Atatark Library, our team who so painstakingly worked on the restoration and conservation of the works exhibited, Prof. Dr. Baha Tanman for his contributions, Galru Tanman, who was so generous with her support, and the Istanbul Research Institute, all of you have our eternal gratitude.

Byzantine manuscripts in Bucharest's collections.= Manuscrise bizantine în colectii bucurestene. Project coordinator: Ileana Stanculescu. From the first article: "From the photographs taken over time, we chose those which best capture a special artistic quality with their strictly documentary value. This selection of manuscripts ends before the dawn of the 16th century, given the common view that after the fall of Constantinople (1453) we can no longer speak of a truly Byzantine culture, but only of a Byzantine style, albeit one which continued to shine. The selection of images was also intended to emphasize not only the aesthetics of the illuminated folios, but also those details that are significant for the codices as a whole, things which would dryly translate today as typeface font type, page layout and binding. Far from the sight of all interested parties, the Byzantine manuscripts in the Bucharest repositories are still full of mysteries waiting to be discovered and explained by researchers. We present these images here to provide a platform for a wider discussion of the significance of the Byzantine legacy for Romanian pre-modern culture. For the identification and description of the items chosen we used several catalogues, either manuscript or in print, which we then compared with the corresponding labels used by the repositories. The bibliography at the end of the volume indicates the various catalogues used for each collection. We found a wealth of details pertaining to the manuscript collections of the Romanian Patriarchy in the album published by the archimandrite Policarp. This is an excellent occasion to thank the specialists involved in the inventory of the collection for the additional information they supplied. We extend our warmest gratitude to them. Here and there we updated and corrected the information found in the aforementioned sources in the light of recent research: the dating of ms. sl. II 280, from the Library of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church at the Antim Monastery. We thank Mrs Tatiana Popova (University of St. Petersburg in Severodvinsk), for the observation that we are dealing with a direct copy, made at the end of the 14th century, of the Russian metropolitan Kyprian's reworking (dated 1385) of the Ladder of John Climax. Ms. sl. II 280 belongs to a group of manuscripts kept at Antim Monastery, but originates from a collection in Slava Rusa, a settlement in Dobrogea and a known...".

The building that was originally the Monastery of the Holy Savior in Chora is regarded as one of the most sublime examples of Byzantine art because of its early 14th century mosaics and frescoes. The level of artistic achievement attained in the Chora frescoes parallels the Pre-Renaissance movement that began in Italy and heralds the advent of a new style in Byzantine art. Chora: The Scroll of Heaven takes the reader on a scholarly and artistic journey that delves all the details of this jewel-like structure. The book's text was written by Cyril Mango, one of the most respected names today in the field of Byzantine art history, while its photographs were taken by Ahmet Ertug, an internationally recognized architect and photographer. The photographs appearing in the book were exhibited at the International Byzantine Congress held in Paris in 2002, where they received many accolades. The exhibition was repeated at the Japan Foundation in Tokyo during August 2003 and at the New York Art Institute in May 2004. 30 by 41 cms., hardbound covered with Japanese cloth, presented in a slipcase. The Maftirim repertoire, born in Edirne, the ancient capital of the Ottoman Empire is an example of Jewish mystic music. This music came to our days by being orally transmitted from master to student. However, with this form of transmission the number of these liturgical songs that arrived to our days has dropped from the thousands to very few indeed. The last three masters of this music in Turkey, David Behar, Hazzan Isak Maçoro and Hazzan David Sevi, who recorded the present work are maybe the last remnants of this old tradition. The present collection which is the result of five years of intensive work is the struggle to document and transmit whatever we have left of this kind of Turkish Sephardic liturgical music to the next generations. This unique collection should be of tremendous interest to everyone interested in Turkish Classical Music, Turkish Sephardic Music, Jewish Liturgical Music and any other kind of liturgical music. What will you find in the book that accompanies the album? A detailed introductory study on the Maftirim by Prof. Edwin Seroussi from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem; A repertoire of piyyutim by poets stretching from Rabbi Israel Najjara (ca. 1550-1625) to Isaac Eliyahu Navon (d. 1952) printed in the collection Shirei Israel be-Eretz ha-Qedem (Istanbul 1925/6) and performed by the Maftirim until the last generations; Square Hebrew text researched revised and formalized by Prof. Tova Be'eri from Tel Aviv University; Square Hebrew text typed of the piyyutim, vocalized and annotated by Prof. Isaac Jerusalmi (Hebrew Union College, Cincinnati) with romanized transliteration and Ladino, Turkish and English translations; Musical scores digitalized by Karen Gerson Sarhon and edited by Udî Mahmut Özbay, who also included the "usûls" and metronome values; Lavish pictures of the present-day synagogues of Turkey taken by the famous photographer Izzet Keribar. What will you find in the album? The recordings of the repertoire kept in the memory of three Maftirim masters of the last and present generation, David Behar, the late Hazzan Isak Maçoro and Hazzan David Sevi in 4 CDs (audio) and 1 DVD (visual). A total of nearly 6 hours of audio and visual recordings.
