Suprisingly few archaelogical excavations have taken place for various reasons and most of the serious work conducted by scientists devoted to the issue of Istanbul's subterranean features has been left incomplete. Archeologists, eho found the acquisition of sponsorship easy for excavations and research conducted on the historical sites of the Hittites, Urartus, Sumerians, and Lycians, appear to have faced great financial difficulties when it came to exploring Istanbul's hidden depths. Consequently, we do not really have a good account of what is hidden in the subterranean world of the city. Despite the hundreds of different resources available to us, somehow they are never quite sufficient enough to guide us to that world as we follow the footsteps of history; this is mainly due to the continual construction work that changes the layout with each passing day. Even street names change regularly and every day more underpasses, overpasses, bridges, and viaducts are being constructed in the city. This means, therefore, it is inevitable that researchers will lose these traces of history and the hope they have of finding valuable information. This has been my experience and I decided to write this book in order to help others find their path and not endure the difficult experiences I have encountered. Istanbul is truly a boundless ocean. This is not a history book merely telling the story of Istanbul. We could call it a tribute to the remains of the many civilisations that have been sleeping under the city for many centuries.".

New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English. 200 p. The urban development of Istanbul in the Nineteenth century: The role of expropriations. After the proclamation of the Tanzîmât Edict, the government wanted to re-arrange the city. To this end, the Building and Expropriation Regulations that determined how modern city planning would be made as of 1840 were published. It was clearly stated that the government would base expropriations made to expand roads, allotment of burnt areas again, determination of construction rules, and opening the areas where reconstruction was not allowed to settlement,in essence all new urban development activities on these new laws. While expropriations were carried out, it was emphasized that, especially when for "public interest", the operation would be made with the consent of the landowner and after the preparation of maps. All of these can be said to be the reflections of modernity. This book examines the expropriation activities which were the most important tools for the government in the process of reconstruction implemented in Istanbul in the nineteenth century. It argues that the urban development which is at the intersection of centralization and modernization, and the concept of modern expropriation was a consequence of the change in the perspective and the understanding of the Ottoman government. Additionally, in the book, while the concept of modern expropriation is being evaluated in relation to the transformation in the governmental and legal mentality, the economic and social aspects of the expropriations are also emphasized. Other reconstruction processes occurring in other cities in the Ottoman Empire and other European cities which were taken as models in the reconstruction process of the capital city were investigated and documented here for the sake of approaching the expropriations from a comparative angle. This book aims to offer a holistic addition to literature on the urban history of Istanbul in the nineteenth century.

This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community. New English Paperback. Pbo. Large 8vo. (24 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 73 p., color and b/w ills. The Sisli Mosque. Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Photography Collection.= Sisli Camii. Suna ve Inan Kiraç Vakfi Fotograf Koleksiyonu. [Exhibition catalogue]. The photographs collected constituted the kernel of the Foundation's Photography Collection. Since the day the Istanbul Research Institute was opened in 2007, this collection grew with acquisitions and other donations, reaching approximately 130,000 photographs, with Istanbul as their main focus and covering a period from the 1850s to the 1960s. Years of classification and identification have finally brought us to the point of being able to create new projects. As a result, we have planned the Suna and Inan Kirac Photography Collection Series, which will consist of thematically structured groups of photographs. This album-book is the first publication in this series, discussing the architectural journey of Sisli Mosque, the first monumental religious building of Republican Istanbul. One of the reasons we have chosen Sisli Mosque is that this is the first mosque in the city's history that was built not under the aegis of the sultan or statesmen but through the collective effort of the people. Another reason is that Sisli Mosque, unlike the architectural thought and production of the 1940s, which was shaped throughout the country by winds of modernism, reflected the classical Ottoman style and has been accepted as a stylistic example, providing a prototype for neo-Ottoman mosques built in its wake. In addition, the photographs of the mosque we publish here have almost exclusively been taken by Foto Sabah, one of the leading studios of the period, which indicates that the process of the mosque's construction between 1947 and 1949 was deliberately documented at regular intervals. In those years when documentation and preservation was not habitual and architectural work was seldom archived, such an effort is noteworthy. We hope that this title and the album-books we will publish will help researchers in analyzing Istanbul's historical identity.

With the years, memories tend to become like islands in the ever encroaching sea of life, some sleeping peacefully, with wavlets breaking languidly on their shores, others vivid; all these help to revitalise the more dormant recollections. Thrace the mysterious, an almost unknown region, is a natural land bridge traversed by countless migrations as well as warlike groups: Persians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, Huns, Byzantines, Crusaders, Ottomans and lastly, Bulgarian Turks. Thrace is the setting for the historic episodes and the author's recollections in this, her ninth published book.
