As a propagandist Claudian offers unique illumination of the intrigues inside and between the rival courts of Milan and Constantinople in the decisive years following the death of Theodosius the Great. Though a Greek by birth, Claudian revived Latin poetry with a flair not seen since the Silver Age- and not to be seen again. This book studies Claudian's political and propagandist techniques, his accounts of Stilico's campaigns and rivals, his debt to Greek rhetorical theory and contemporary poetry, his culture, attitudes to Rome and its problems and, not least, his position as a pagan at a Christian court. ; 508 pages

New New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). In English. 344 p. Color and b/w ills. 'City of the Caesars Kayseri is devoted to the city of Kayseri, described by Evliyâ Çelebi as the "city of the caesars". This account is not confined to the city's excellent climate, which Evliyâ attributes to "the gentle breezes that blow constantly throughout summer and autumn, since the city lies beneath Mount Erciyes in the centre of Anatolia, open to the north and west but closed to the pernicious southwesterly winds", and to the marvellous cured beef and garlic sausage "sent as gifts to rulers", but seeks to embrace its entire legacy and culture in a broad sweep extending from antiquity to the Seljuks, Ottomans and the present day, including its monumental and vernacular architecture, Mount Erciyes, stuffed dumplings and music. In City of the Caesars Kayseri the reader is taken on a step by step journey tracing the past of the city and province, from Erkilet to Tavlusun, Germir, Talas, Soganli and Gesi, recording all its memorable aspects not just in writing but in lavish illustrations. Fikri Kulakoglu has written about Kültepe/Kanesh, Anatolia's ancient international trading centre; Nilay Çoragan Karakaya about Kayseri's Roman and Byzantine monuments; Mustafa Çayirdag about the Seljuk period; Seyda Güngör Açikgöz about the Ottoman period; and Vacit Imamoglu about daily life and vernacular architecture. This is the latest in the series of city monographs published by Yapi Kredi Publications, following on from Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Bursa, Trabzon, Edirne, Diyarbakir, Adana, Konya, Urfa, Balikesir, Mersin, Mardin, Kars, Antep, Kastamonu, Maras, Denizli and Çanakkale. City of the Caesars Kayseri is edited by Filiz Özdem and illustrated with photographs by Hakan Ezilmez'.

"Churches in Istanbul is a book about an interesting aspect of a city of a city of many colours and many worlds: Once 'the Rome of the East', Istanbul has housed many religions, and still remains an attraction for who wish to explore the memory of a distant past. The religious sites of the Chiristian peoples who worshipped in the city gives one the opportunity to do just that. Some of these churches are still active, some are in ruins, and some have been turned into mosques - but they all carry the scent of histor within their stones, their domes and arches, their altars, their chapels. Edith Oyhon and Bente Etingu have wandered in the streets of Istanbul searching for traces of time past. This book isa journey into those worlds that they have discoverd: Stories of how some of the churches dating back to Byzantine times were built, the Protestants and others. Churches in Istanbul is a guide that will encourage the reader- wanderer to seek further in a city that hides much more!".

New English Original bdg. HC. In special publisher's box. Folio. (41 x 30 cm). In English. 257 p., 107 numerous color plts. Chora: The scroll of heaven. Photos by Ahmet Ertug. First Edition. The building that was originally the Monastery of the Holy Savior in Chora is regarded as one of the most sublime examples of Byzantine art because of its early 14th century mosaics and frescoes. The level of artistic achievement attained in the Chora frescoes parallels the Pre-Renaissance movement that began in Italy and heralds the advent of a new style in Byzantine art. Chora: The Scroll of Heaven takes the reader on a scholarly and artistic journey that delves all the details of this jewel-like structure. The book's text was written by Cyril Mango, one of the most respected names today in the field of Byzantine art history, while its photographs were taken by Ahmet Ertug, an internationally recognized architect and photographer. The photographs appearing in the book were exhibited at the International Byzantine Congress held in Paris in 2002, where they received many accolades. The exhibition was repeated at the Japan Foundation in Tokyo during August 2003 and at the New York Art Institute in May 2004. 30 by 41 cms., hardbound covered with Japanese cloth, presented in a slipcase. Located in the Edirnekapi neighborhood of Istanbul and dating as far back as the 6th Century, the Church of Chora Monastery (Kariye Mosque) stands out as a noteworthy Byzantine work of art in the world of art history with its mosaics and frescoes. The monastery was renovated during the Palaeologos Dynasty, also known as the "Third Golden Age" of Byzantine Art, and has spectacular mosaics and frescoes which are at the heart of our work. Before studying these mosaics and frescoes in our book, we provided the vast history of the period in an effort to clarify the themes featured on the panels. Also included in our book is the life story of Theodore Metochites, a versatile administrator and the person behind the creation of the mosaics and frescoes of the monastery which represent the most beautiful examples of Byzantine art. There are mosaics in the exterior and interior narthexes of Chora depicting the lives of Jesus and Mary as well as religious stories, while its domes, arches and walls have both mosaics and frescoes concerning subjects that are interrelated and depicted mostly together and sometimes in different locations. For a holistic recounting of those related depictions that are placed independently from each other, repetitions were necessary at times. In addition to this world-renowned church which we tried to present to you within a broad time line, we also covered the other churches in Istanbul that belong to the Byzantine Period, in the last section of our book. We ended our journey with these churches and monasteries, which are also significant in Byzantine history.
