Original Nazi anti-resistance poster from occupied Amsterdam announcing that “a number of people have been shot by firing squad or on the spot in recent days for attempting to commit sabotage against the German occupying forces†and warning that “The population of the city of Amsterdam is seriously warned to refrain from anything that endangers public peace and security. Violations of this will be severely punished.†
A final sentence notes in all capital letters that “TEARING DOWN OR DAMAGING THIS POSTER IS PUNISHABLE.â€
The handwritten date “16-9-44†is legible in the lower right corner; we presume this to be the date that the poster was originally either put up or taken down.
Anne Frank's life in Amsterdam was defined by the Nazi occupation and her family's subsequent hiding to evade persecution. The Nazi invasion in 1940 led to the implementation of anti-Jewish laws forcing the Frank family to go into hiding in 1942 to avoid deportation to concentration camps. During this time Anne documented her experiences and thoughts in her diary which later became the world’s defining first-hand account of Jewish life during the Holocaust.
Over 80% of Amsterdam’s 79000 Jews were murdered by the Nazis.
We have been able to locate no other surviving copies of this rare original Nazi poster from occupied Amsterdam.
Paper very slightly age toned as expected but colors and text remain bright and clear. A vertical and horizontal fold probably dating to the date of production remain but with no tears. An amazingly well-preserved original Nazi poster from the occupation of Amsterdam.
