Horace Binney 1780-1875 who practiced law in Philadelphia for more than a half-century published three pamphlets early in the Civil War rationalizing Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus; here John T. Montgomery 1817-1895 another Philadelphia lawyer takes issue with his arguments "to give the world his reasons for humbling from its hitherto proud position one of the dearest principles of liberty know to free institutions" and criticizes Lincoln's actions. Originally published by Henry Bohn as part of his 'Illustrated Library' series in 1861. In 1864 however he had reconciled himself with the fact that his sons were not interested in publishing and sold his publishing House to George Bell who issued this new edition. Original title page included as was often the case with new editions by other Houses. Included: clippings on Bohn and also "Paradise Lost". Both volumes are genial. The boards have stamped decoration and gilt titling on the spine worn but bold. The boards of both are much worn scuffed marked. They are comfortable and secure and sure. The frontispages have previous owner inscriptions. The contents are benign and comfortable. They have some pencilled annotations and underlining. There are occasional age-related mottling marks. Frontis portrait of Montgomery and over 100 engraved illustrations. The binding is in good clean condition with a little rubbing to the front hinge only.
