First edition of the author's first book 8vo pp. viii 200; original blue paper-covered boards cream paper shelfback printed paper label on spine; a bit of cracking along the front joint boards somewhat soiled; all else very good sound and clean. Montgomery 1771-1854 was a Scottish poet and writer of hymns. "He was raised in the Moravian Church and theologically trained there so that his writings often reflect concern for humanitarian causes such as the abolition of slavery and the exploitation of child chimney sweeps" Wikipedia. Early in life he worked for an auctioneer and bookseller in Sheffield and published the local newspaper the Sheffield Iris. For his political views he was twice imprisoned for sedition and his time in jail was the seed for his first book Prison Amusements. He wrote a number of books of poetry and among his many hymns was "The Lord Is My Shepherd" which is still a favorite today. J. Johnson, no. 72, St. Paul's Church Yard. 195011512Cardiff: Cinematograph Exhibitors Association 1950. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. Quarto 99pp. illustrated. Very good in the publisher's printed wrappers with a few mild stains and three small owner's names on the interior of hte front wrapper. A nicely produced souvenir booklet from this variety show benefit performance held in honor of His Majesty Goerge VI to benefit the Cinematograph Exhibitors Association Benevolent Fund. A "Meet the Stars" event was held during the event which included such figures as Gloria Swanson Petula Clark spelled "Clarke" here Montgomery Clift Jack Warner the British actor and Terry Thomas among others. Each of those figures named above has SIGNED the program on the "Meet the Stars" spread. Keith Matthews the Director of the Theatre Orchestra has also signed his name. A ticket stub for the event is laid in at the front. A wonderfully eclectic group of autographs from some major mid-century American and British stars. Swanson in particular was enjoying a new burst of fame at the time as "Sunset Boulevard" had premiered just three months before this event. Note that her signature here is particularly fast and it looks like the pen skipped at least once but we have no doubt that it is entirely authentic given the context. 187422814Utah 1874. First printing. Ephemera. Very good condition. A rare complimentary pass for the Morman-built Utah Central Railroad a company founded by Brigham Young to connect Salt Lake City to the First Transcontinental Railroad 40 miles to the north in Ogden. The building of the spur was the critical link connecting Salt Lake City to the national rail system and the outside world. The engraved pass permitted Gen'l Meigs & Son dated January 8 1874 and signed by John Sharp. It reads "to Ogden and return". On the verso are "Conditions under with this ticket is issued" describing the company's policy in case of injury or loss of baggage.<br /> <br /> Union Pacific Railroad officials had declined to build the transcontinental line through Salt Lake City a decision which displeased Brigham Young. He formed his own company the Utah Central Railroad which was incorporated in 1869. The spur was completed in January 1870. Brigham Young attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Utah Central held in Ogden in 1869 digging the first shovel full of dirt. In 1870 he hammered in the final commemorative spike with the words "Holiness to the Lord" engraved on it. Four years later when this complimentary pass was written out to the distinguished passenger General Montgomery Meigs the general was still serving as Quartermaster General of the Army. Meigs is recognized for his exemplary role as supplier in chief for the North during the Civil War. In just one year following the First Battle of Bull Run 1861 with no effective system yet in place Meigs set up the complete supply chain to feed and support the Union war effort. Meigs notably worked out the transportation for the shifting supply lines via wagon and railroad.<br /> <br /> The Utah Central appears to have operated primarily a commercial line in its early years. Newspaper accounts from the early 1870s the Utah Mining Gazette show the acquisition of railroad materials including locomotives cars and rail. This 1874 complimentary pass for General Meigs has a surprisingly low number -- it is numbered 130 -- for a railroad spur which had been completed four years earlier. The line perhaps carried few complimentary passengers as it worked to establish itself. In November 1872 the line acquired a new locomotive made by Hinkley & Williams of Boston at a cost of $14000 Deseret Evening News November 7 1872. By 1878 Union Pacific gained control of Utah Central. Union Pacific combined the shares owned by its officers and directors with the shares it had previously purchased from Brigham Young 5000 of Brigham Young's original 7600 shares. <br /> <br /> John Sharp 1820 - 1891 was Brigham Young's personal representative as well as representative of the LDS Church in transcontinental railroad construction negotiations with the Union Pacific Railroad. Sharp became an officer for the Utah Central Railroad and the Utah Southern Railroad and a director for the Union Pacific Railroad Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution Deseret Telegraph Company and Deseret National Bank.<br /> <br /> Engraved decorative border with the name of the railroad engraved in elaborate font. 4 3/4 x 3 1/4". A near fine copy signed by the author on the half title page in blue ink "Inscribed personally by/the author:/ Montgomery of Alamein/F.M./September 1970" in crimson cloth covered boards with gilt titling to the spine pushing to corners. The very good clipped wrapper with pushing to upper and lower edge chipping to spine tips closed tear to lower edge of front panel. Montgomery one of Britain's most prominent military leaders shares insights into his strategies leadership style and the key campaigns he was involved in. The memoir covers his early years training and service in various theatres of war but it primarily focuses on his command of the British Eighth Army in North Africa and the famous Battle of El Alamein where he achieved a decisive victory against the Axis forces led by General Erwin Rommel. Montgomery also discusses his leadership during the Allied invasion of Normandy D-Day and the subsequent campaign in Northwest Europe where he led the British and Canadian forces to victory against Nazi Germany. Throughout the memoirs Montgomery reflects on the challenges of high command the personalities of other Allied leaders like General Dwight D. Eisenhower and Winston Churchill and the strategic decisions that shaped the outcome of the war.
