Internally clean with a few scant markings to the endpapers no library markings. Some present but mild dampstains to the page block. The author was the son of John Montgomery an Irish-born Boston merchant who had relocated to Spain. The younger Montgomery was educated in England and worked as a diplomat for the United States. Uncommonly worldly for his time this tome recounts the author's travels through Guatemala during the period immediately following the establishment of hte Monroe Doctrine. 1853005092<p>London. the leather is Slightly rubbed gold motif on each corner is in very good condition; 5 raised bands on spine with gilt lineations; skiver with title on spine is dull. 2 bookplates and a dealer's sticker on front paste-down. There is a moderate amount of foxing on the end papers and the verso to the first map in the series. This copy has no title page which appears to be standard - I imagine because it was included on Vol 1 only. So no definite printing date can be given. The last date in the text is 1853. Mendelssohn SA Bibliography on page 988 lists the book as "The British Colonies Division VII and printing date 1851 but he probably took the date from Vol 1. Frontis of Sir Ralph Abercromby 1734-1801 hero of Aboukir Bay 1801; with tissue guard; 208 pages with tables; <strong>5 double page col maps with vignettes all unfoxed </strong>and very frame-able : Africa; Cape Colony; Natal and Kaffraria; Western Africa; Islands of the Atlantic with lovely engravings of landscapes by J Rankin and others. All maps have an extra crease 70 - 120mm long which with care could be ironed out. Each map could be worth US$ 85. Quarter Calf and Marbled Boards.
