19642298New York: BlueBeat Publications 1964. First Edition.

Quarto 11 x 8 1/2 inches; 280 x 216 mm 3 41 2 mimeographed leaves rectos only except for final page in stapled illustrated wrappers.

The first -- and apparently only -- issue of BlueBeat a mimeographed poetry magazine from New York's Lower East Side. The editors George Montgomery and Erik Kiviat were also involved in Yowl another New York poetry magazine. According to the title page only 207 copies were printed.

In the introduction poet Kirby Congdon makes the case for a mimeographed poetry magazine that's not issued by established publishers: "It can be produced by any poet or group of poets; it avoids large monetary entanglements and its distribution is impersonal and objective. And best of all a mimeo can experiment with new ideas and expose new poets because it can afford to fail."

Some of the contributors were already known in 1964 and were active in the New York poetry scene but many others were newcomers or relatively unknown.

The contributors by order of appearance: Margo Love Ray Bremser Jim Brody Jerry Greenberg Jonas Kover Judson Crews Jay Socin Paul Blackburn Barbara Moraff Alex Wiener who drew the cover and also has a poem here Jack Micheline Bob Blossom John Keys Carol Bergé Barbara Jarvik Ted Berrigan Gerard Malanga Harold Carrington Stanley Fisher Jerry Greenberg a second poem Tuli Kupferberg Charles Guenther Bob Blossom a second poem Lynn Fisher Aram Saroyan Stephen Tropp Kirby Congdon also author of the introduction Ed Sanders Walter Lowenfels Gloria Tropp Bonnie Bremser Allen W. De Loach Lenore Kandel Al Katzman R.C. Wilson Szabo Penrod Erik Kiviat and George Montgomery.

Following the poems there's a page called "Notes" featuring short sometimes irreverent bios of the contributors: Lenore Kandel: "belly dancer-poet." Margo Love: "recluse." The table of contents appears as the final page the only page printed on the verso.

OCLC shows 21 institutional holdings of this mimeo publication. OCLC 2103934. Scarce in commerce.

CONDITION: Mild toning to extremities of some pages a couple of spots of foxing a few nicks to upper wrapper and final page. Overall Very Good or better.
