With a conception of music that took Romanticism as its starting point he was regarded by many at the end of the 1920s as progressive but not to an extent that would have endangered performances of his works in the 1930s and 40s or that would have forced him to emigrate. Among the most widely performed of contemporary composers he became known primarily through his operas; Iwan Tarassenko 1938 demonstrates the humanistic ideals of the 'good man' and both the ballet Österreichische Bauernhochzeit 1933 and the opera Das Werbekleid 1943 feature folk elements. His honours include the Austrian State Prize 1937 and the prize of the City of Vienna 1960." Sigrid Wiesmann in Grove Music Online. [Franz Salmhofer] unknown books

003518West Germany. NA. Very Good. N.d. late 1940s to early 1950s. The largest block measures 22 cm or 8.5 inches square and the smallest 6 cm or 2.5 inches with each successive block about 1.5 cm or .5 inches larger than the preceding one. The illustrations applied to a particular block tend to have some element in common -- fruits on one or farm animals teddy bears or some other cohesive element with the largest and most prominent block being the one that is always exposed showing scenes from fairy tales. Ilse Lungershausen was a prolific illustrator of children's books and toys. The fairy tale scenes in particular will bring to mind Disney style and some of the other illustrations have a kinship to other mid-20th century juvenile illustration such as the Sally Dick and Jane primers used in the English-speaking world. The Snow White litho on the largest block has loss on the bottom running between one and two inches tall and representing perhaps 15 percent of the image and the wood behind this paper loss is also a little chewed up. Otherwise some wear along the edges both of the paper and the wood but all the other images barring a few trivial losses are virtually entirely intact.

unknown books

203636 measures from the "Sonatas de El Escorial" for piano. 189 x 213 mm. On partial letterhead of the Junta de Cultura Española.

Creased at folds; minor paper loss to foot; two file holes to left margin. "Notable amongst his early works are the modernist Naturaleza muerta Dos sonatas de El Escorial inspired by Soler and Marinero en tierra settings of poems by Alberti which contain some of his most accessible music. Halffter's music follows in the tradition of Falla: the basis is tonal sometimes enriched with bold and witty polytonal inflections; the rhythm is asymmetrical and varied; the style is above all clear and spare. In 1953 in the Tres hojas de album for piano he began to use 12-note serialism the first Mexican composer to do so. This however did not alter the essentially melodic nature of his work." Antonio Iglesias and Juan Orrego-Salas in Grove Music Online.

An attractive example from one of this Mexican composer's most notable works. unknown books

Ex library Carnegie Institution of Washington Mount Wilson Observatory with call number gilt stamped on spine and library blind-stamp on front free end paper. Clean copy handsomely bound; covers lightly freckled else fine. RARE. FIRST EDITION. PROBABILITY OF A MANY-PARTICLE SYSTEM INTRODUCED. This paper deals with gas degeneracy and paramagnetism. In a footnote note 1 p. 83 Pauli introduced for the first time the probability for a many-particle system with coordinates q1. . .qf: "q1. . .qf .dq1. . .dqf is the probability that in the relevant quantum state of the system the coordinates simultaneously lie in the relevant volume element of configuration space." Thus Pauli's paper is a contribution to the ongoing problem of the appropriate application of Bose-Einstein statistics or Fermi-Dirac statistics. In this paper Pauli wrote "We shall take the point of view also advocated by Dirac that the Fermi and not the Einstein-Bose statistics applies to the material gas" thus clearing up the matter. See Pais Inward bound p. 258; Pais Subtle is the Lord p. 432 and 285. The following articles by important contributors are included in volume 41: with: LAUE Max von 1879-1960 & Lise MEITNER 1878-1968. "Die berechnung der reichweitestreuung aus Wilson-Aufnahmen." In: Zeitschrift fur physik 41 1927 pp. 397-406. In this paper Meitner and von Laue report their inconclusive efforts to test a theoretical formula of Bohr's that related statistical variations in range to the mechanism by which alpha particles lost energy to the atoms they encountered. "In the first part of his paper Pauli gave a beautiful account of this projective geometry and its tensor analysis which were developed from first principles and he formulated the Einstein-Maxwell equations in projective coordinates. The second part dealt with the incorporation of spinors and of Dirac's equation into this geometrical structure. In my opinion this is by far the most satisfactory exposition of spinors in general relativity – quite independent of the problems of a unified field theory." Bargmann. Wolfgang Pauli's work on relativity which began with his article on the theory of relativity for the Encyklopadie der mathematischen Wissenschaften in 1921 ed. Felix Klein when Pauli was twenty years old established Pauli as a scientist of rare depth and of an unsurpassed power of both synthesis and critical analysis. Russell was an English composer pianist and singer.

"He claimed to have written the music for over 800 songs. A more realistic figure is perhaps 300 including 80 or so written in the United States many of his melodies being reissued with new lyrics and titles . Among the most popular were the sentimental "The Old Arm Chair" and the melodramatic "Woodman! Spare That Tree!" He also composed rousing songs about traveling on land or sea and several descriptive multi-sectional pieces similar in style and emotional content to Italian operatic scenes. Some of Russell's songs were written as statements for social reform; these include "The Maniac" concerning the "barbarous" conditions of private mental institutions "The Gambler's Wife" on the plight of a deserted mother and child and "The Indian Hunter" on racial intolerance." 1863026070Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott 1863. xvi 13-604 pages. While known as the first American physician to devote himself entirely to neurology and the author of the first treatise on the subject it was his role in the Civil War and this major work for which he is best remembered. When Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton fired Clement Finley the Surgeon General Abraham Lincoln against Stanton's advice named the 34-year-old Hammond to succeed him with the rank of brigadier general. On April 1962 he became Surgeon General of the Army. He launched many reforms ranging from qualifications of medical personnel importance of ventilation record-keeping and the creation of the Satterlee Hospital. He promoted Jonathan Letterman which brought an efficient ambulance system to the service. He banned mercury from army supplies. Since hygienic standards were still very poor in the United States Army and soldiers often died because of inadequate medical care poor sanitary conditions and lack of attention to proper shelter and nutrition since there was no up-to-date work on the subject he wrote this book to be distributed to all officers and medical personnel. A thorough and detailed book it contains many of the ideas and principles that Hammond instituted in his reform of the army medical service. In writing on morbid habits he warns of the mischief caused by masturbation which causes he notes that "the masturbator shuns society.and evinces an apathy for all kinds of amusements." He discusses all aspects of diet providing charts and comparisons of the requirements in the British and Russian armies. How to keep the alimentary canal in good order is a major concern for the soldier.
