1953284434Chicago 1953. First. unbound. very good. Outstanding T.L.S. 4to. 1 page personal stationary Chicago August 31 1953 to political adviser and Pulitzer Prize recipient Leland Stowe in part: ".I am baffled by the sudden change of attitude about McCarthy by many people I have talked to but perhaps "baffled" is not the word exactly. At any rate there seems to be a feeling he is slipping fast since his attack on the clergy and for me to proceed too aggressively would be to reinvigorate him because of the Protestant political implications." Stevenson's dilemma: McCarthy a staunch Catholic aligned himself with Joseph P. Kennedy a powerful Democrat and another rabid anti-Communist. The relationship was so strong that McCarthy even dated Kennedy daughters Patricia and Eunice. In addition to this Senator John F. Kennedy who served with McCarthy did not support Kennedy's Republican opponent Henry Cabot Lodge. As all this was happening McCarthy became godfather to Robert F. Kennedy's first child Kathleen and would later select Robert as a Council serving on this committee. After all Joseph Kennedy had an agenda: he would support McCarthy as a national Catholic politician who in return might help pave the way for a younger Kennedy's Presidential candidacy. Hagedorn: 51 First edition.

The second part of this book contains many clever problems selected from those which competed in a tournament arranged by Frere the chess editor of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. The first part was published without the sanction or approval of Morphy and comprises games with notes copied form the Chess Monthly The Era and other sources without any special acknowledgment. The collection was evidently hurriedly and incompetently made to take advantage of the demand created by Morphy's success in Europe. Hadgedorn.

Born on 8th December 1820 in Brooklyn of a French Creole father and a mother of Irish descent Thomas Frere's interest in chess is sparked in 1827 on seeing "the Turk" Maelzel's automaton chess player at Tammany Hall. The story leaps forward to 1854 with Frere a married man with three children working for the Home Life Insurance Company in Wall Street whilst also operating a printing engraving and publishing business. He witnesses the start of public chess in New York when the owner of Limberger's saloon at the corner of Fulton and Nassau Streets decides to replace the decrepit chess equipment used by two patrons with several new sets and boards. Within three years in excess of fifty players are frequenting the establishment. Moving from Limberger's saloon to Brooklyn in 1856 Frere starts the Brooklyn Chess Club. Frere becomes involved with organizing and running the First American Chess Congress held in New York. Morphy takes first prize in the Grand Tournament ahead of Louis Paulson in second. Paulsen causes a sensation with his feats of blindfold chess. In 1859 Frere publishes the first book about the new American chess sensation Morphy's Games of Chess and Frere's Problem Tournament. During 1858 through 1859 he becomes embroiled in a feud with Daniel W. Most bifoliums. 4to Largest 21" x 9-1/2" unfolded. A lovely group of lettersheets by Charles Magnus entirely typical of his output. Lettersheets were a convenient and thrifty form of stationery in an era which postage was calculated on the number of sheets used. Folded in half these four pages were charged as a single page.

Charles Magnus emigrated to New York with his family in the late 1840s. His older brother published the weekly German language newspaper Deutsche Schnellpost and it was there that Charles learned the trade eventually going out on his own. In the guises of a publisher map dealer bookseller and stationer he issued more than a thousand pieces of illustrated stationery - lettersheets envelopes song sheets as well as prints - usually copying the work from other sources without attribution sometimes altering the images slightly. He continued to use lithography and hand-coloring long after other publishers turned to photomechanical reproduction processes. Charles Magnus, 61 Bowery unknown books
