003518West Germany. NA. Very Good. N.d. late 1940s to early 1950s. The largest block measures 22 cm or 8.5 inches square and the smallest 6 cm or 2.5 inches with each successive block about 1.5 cm or .5 inches larger than the preceding one. The illustrations applied to a particular block tend to have some element in common -- fruits on one or farm animals teddy bears or some other cohesive element with the largest and most prominent block being the one that is always exposed showing scenes from fairy tales. Ilse Lungershausen was a prolific illustrator of children's books and toys. The fairy tale scenes in particular will bring to mind Disney style and some of the other illustrations have a kinship to other mid-20th century juvenile illustration such as the Sally Dick and Jane primers used in the English-speaking world. The Snow White litho on the largest block has loss on the bottom running between one and two inches tall and representing perhaps 15 percent of the image and the wood behind this paper loss is also a little chewed up. Otherwise some wear along the edges both of the paper and the wood but all the other images barring a few trivial losses are virtually entirely intact.

unknown books

With a conception of music that took Romanticism as its starting point he was regarded by many at the end of the 1920s as progressive but not to an extent that would have endangered performances of his works in the 1930s and 40s or that would have forced him to emigrate. Among the most widely performed of contemporary composers he became known primarily through his operas; Iwan Tarassenko 1938 demonstrates the humanistic ideals of the 'good man' and both the ballet Österreichische Bauernhochzeit 1933 and the opera Das Werbekleid 1943 feature folk elements. His honours include the Austrian State Prize 1937 and the prize of the City of Vienna 1960." Sigrid Wiesmann in Grove Music Online. [Franz Salmhofer] unknown books

Blind-stamp of the Carnegie Institution of Washington Mount Wilson Observatory. Fine. FIRST EDITION. "The period 1923-1933 marks the peak of Stern's contributions to physics. Shortly after assuming his post at Hamburg on 1 January 1923 he set out to organize a laboratory specially equipped for molecular-beam research and to devise a program for conducting this research which was executed to a large degree with remarkable success. . . . The program was concerned with demonstrating the wave nature of particles - a revolutionary assumption introduced in 1924 by Louis de Broglie that became the foundation of modern quantum mechanics. . . . The significance of the work on the wave nature of particles is similar to that of the Stern-Gerlach experiment: each provided unambiguous direct and thoroughly convincing proof of revolutionary concepts introduced into the foundations of physics. These experiments were essential for the acceptance of new ideas that had previously been regarded with considerable skepticism." DSB. DSB XIII pp. 40-43. Julius Springer, 1932. hardcover books
