It was composed while on assignment from the Foreign Information Service a division of the Office of Strategic Services charged with combating Nazi propaganda. His original story depicting a small American town invaded by enemy troops was rejected by the FIS who feared that it might demoralize the civilian public. In his revised manuscript published by Viking in 1942 Steinbeck kept the same plot but set it in an unnamed Scandinavian town rather than the United States. Despite mixed critical reception the book was a remarkable public success outselling The Grapes of Wrath two-to-one in pre-publication; it would eventually pass through 76 editions. Shortly after publication the producer Oscar Serlin purchased the dramatic rights to The Moon is Down Herman Shumlin initially bought them but passed them on saying he “did not care for The Moon is Down’s politics.†Serlin known for his production of “Life with Father†accepted the challenge believing Steinbeck’s play would attract a large audience. “The Moon is Down†premiered on Broadway in April 1942 starring Otto Kruger as Colonel Lanser and Ralph Morgan as Mayor Orden. Like the novel before it the play was publicly adored but critically lambasted. Life magazine reported that it was “trumpeted louder than any literary event of the season†while the critical consensus was that “Steinbeck was too easy on the Germans too optimistic about the ultimate victory of the Allies and ultimately too moralistic." Despite its initial Broadway run lasting only nine weeks the play was immensely successful on the road and abroad especially in London and Stockholm. Rather surprisingly it was nominated for Best Play by the New York Drama Critics’ Circle and placed second.Provenance: From the estate of producer Oscar Serlin. At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles she won a gold medal in the individual all-around competition as well as two silver medals and two bronze medals. Retton's performance made her one of the most popular athletes in the United States. Her gold medal win was historic as Retton was the first American woman to win the all-around gold medal in Olympic gymnastics.<br/> <br/> unknown

Written just six months before his untimely death in full: "Many thanks for the pictures. The one I enclose for you was taken in England at some college. Hope its O.K. I would like to get together with you. If you can get to Tumble brook some nite call me and we'll have dinner. Please consider this an invitation. Sincerely Dick Ruedebusch." Accompanied by the original inscribed signed photo -- a 10 x 8-inch black-and-white image of Ruedebusch performing on stage inscribed and signed in full: "Dennis: If Jazz had more friends like you it would be a wonderful musical world Dick Ruedebusch." The letter is creased and has several small faint stains; very good- condition. The photo has some uneven gloss as well as small staple holes at the corners; good condition.<br/> <br/> Wisconsin born musician who self taught himself Dixieland Jazz by playing trumpet to recordings of Bob Crosby's Dixie Combo. Just as his career was skyrocketing with his ensemble The Underprivileged Five he died suddenly at the age of 42.<br/> <br/> unknown

Also included is a carbon copy letter from Jones to Thomas. In this correspondence Thomas a U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate and co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union deals with issues of photography with photographer Jones. The letters three of which measure 8.5 x 5.5 inches and one which measures 11 x 8.5 inches were written from 1963 to 1967. All four have natural folds and are in very good condition.<br/> <br/> unknown

Strand Jackson for a gift of 13 dozen roses. Accompanied by hand-addressed envelope as well as a typed letter signed from George C. Wallace as a presidential candidate signed "George C." to Dr. Jackson 1 page 10.5 x 7.25 inches October 3 1968. Also included is a scarce "Wallace To Washington '72" bumper sticker. All these items are in very good condition.<br/> <br/> George Wallace Governor of Alabama was forbidden by Alabama's constitution from succeeding himself in office. He had his wife Lurleen run for Governor in 1966. She was elected by a landslide only to die in office 18 months later.<br/> <br/> unknown

First edition.<br /><br />Although stripped of his title by FIDE for holding his 1993 match with Short outside the world chess body's auspices Kasparov was nevertheless widely considered the legitimate World Champion. The Professional Chess Association PCA created by Kasparov held a series of a series of candidate matches to choose an opponent for him. Viswanathan Anand succeeded in becoming the champion's opponent. The 1995 PCA title match was played on the Observation Deck on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center in New York City. The prize fund was 1500000 US$ with 2/3 for the winner. Ten percent of the fund would to go to the PCA. In case of a tied match Kasparov would retain the PCA title but the prize would be split. The match was to last 20 games instead of the traditional 24 each game played at 40 moves in 2 hours then 20 moves in 1 hour followed by 30 minutes to complete the game. There were to be no timeouts and no adjournments. The match started with eight straight draws a record for the opening of a world championship match until Anand drew first blood by winning game nine. This victory was not to be enjoyed for very long as Kasparov then rebounded by dominantly winning four of the next five games. After 18 games with a final score of 10 11/2 to 7 1/2 Kasparov retained the PCA World Chess Champion title.</p><p>Card signed during the 9th European Chess Club Cup Anand playing for the winning team Lyon-Oyannax.</p><p><strong>Condition:</strong><br /><br />Signed on half title page signed card by Anand laid in else a fine copy.</p> 3H Publications paperback

He sent us one copy of the poster which of course we had to send on to Kesselring. I wrote Jan asking for more copies. He sent me a collection of posters of his theatre in Prague. After searching my mind as to who would really appreciate these it occurred to me that I knew no one who would appreciate their beauty as examples of poster art more than yourself so here is a set." Suppose we do that for a starter and when that is gone.the work may be going so well that the church may be glad to receive more.This is your calling and If ever a man had a calling you have. He has called and calls you so that you will be able to help and sustain in soul and body." This was written at a time when Northrop believed that religion was the catalyst for a successful society.
