1969 · 170487 — 1969. Collection of approximately 500 black and white photographs with their negatives and an extra roll of negatives. Photographs measure 10 x 15.1cm. All in very good condition. A series of black and white photographs 23 rolls of negatives with prints of 22 of the rolls taken on a journey through Japan in autumn 1969 by Professor Basil Johnson. The photographs are accompanied by Professor Johnson's handwritten notes. The places visited include Sapporo and farm landscapes around Takikawa Otaru with images of fishing boats Hakodate rural scenes around Fukushima Numazu Kumamoto the Kita Kyushu coalmines Nagoya Numazu Mt. Fuji Nagoya Kumamoto and Kita Kyushu.Rural scenes include images of tea plantations and mulberry cultivation. There are photos of coal mines and miners' housing in Hokkaido and Kita Kyushu and Prof Johnson's notes on Kita Kyushu include the word "pollution!" This was at the period when Japan's industrial pollution problems were at their height. A number of the photos are of dams and water control schemes. The study tour provided material for Johnson's co-authored book "Place People and Work In Japan: Four Studies" Thomas Nelson and Heinnemann Educational Books 1972 . unknown
