Contemporary small owner’s name in pencil on the contents page dated 1857 and stamped in ink on the first text page. Later owner’s name in ink on front free endpaper dated 1917. Rubbing to the spine joints and edges of the boards front joint is starting holding firm intermittent toning very good. An attractive copy of the first volume of this popular illustrated anthology of contemporary writings for children and young adults. Also known as Cassell’s Illustrated Readings conducted by Tom Hood OCLC states that this serial anthology commenced publication in 1866 and ended in 1868. A Fine original hand-colored lithograph by John Nugent Fitch 1840 - 1927 after a painting by his uncle; Walter Hood Fitch British:1817 -1892. 15 x 23.3 cm. During his long and illustrious career as a botanical painter W. H. Fitch contributed to several of the most important publications produced during the great age of botanical exploration and discovery of the nineteenth century including Curtis' Botanical Magazine and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Undoubtedly Fitch was a major contributor to the art of botanical illustration design and horticulture. Through his drawings which were bold vibrant and exacting Fitch was able to capture the essence of the flower and thus animate the botanical specimens with very few lines. As a consummate lithographer Fitch often executed his compositions directly onto the limestone tablet to be printed directly thus requiring no intermediate study or sketch. His work is an important addition to every botanical collection. Archivally matted in Ivory rag mat with gilt French line decoration. Sized to 12 x 16 inches. Journal of Horticulture, unknown

Eric John Dingwall 1890-1986 was a British anthropologist psychical researcher and librarian. He wrote popular books on Sexology and earned the nickname of "Dirty Ding" due to his interests in erotica. He became interested in the paranormal in 1921 and served as a research officer for the Society of Psychical Research from 1922 to 1927 along with being an honorary vice-president for The Magic Circle and a founding member of its Occult Committee. He also co-wrote the skeptical book "Four Modern Ghosts" with Trevor H. Hall. xii 1 14-232pp 6 of ads bound in blind stamped green cloth inner hinges starting to split occasional light foxing pencil notations on the back free endpaper. Light soiling to matte white areas lightly toned colors vivid. $350. Possibly the work of a Thomas Hood this print is in the style of John Doyle 1797-1868 the leading English caricaturist of the 1830s to 1850s. It is commentary on the work of the 1832 Royal Commission into the Operation of the Poor Laws which drafted the Poor Law Amendment Act. Passed in 1834 it created the system of laws and workhouses described by Dickens. unknown books
