Light marks to the boards and spine. Spine is a little faded. Decorative front board is a little rubbed with further light rubbing to the joints and extremities. Front hinge is tender. Bookseller's label to the rear paste down. Tide mark to the front paste down and front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright with the occasional spot and handling mark. A quintessential work by the absurdist illustrator Ernest Griset and a copy heightened by hand-coloring. 4to. 6 151 5 pp. With 100 or so hand-colored illustrations including frontis. Note that most copies of this lack the coloring of the images. Clean and tight within with newer endpapers. Wear to spine tips and along the edges with cloth rubbed in corners. Spine tear repaired with trace of it still visible. Soil marks on the boards. With handwritten letter from Griset to Edward Whymper the renowned mountaineer dated November 22 1881 mounted onto preliminary leaf. Whymper besides being the first to scale the Matterhorn was a wood engraver and illustrator. In this letter Griset thanks Whymper for a cheque and speaks of a desire to make the acquaintance of Whymper soon afterward. As to the book: 4to. 6151 5 pp. With publisher's cloth front cover and spine bound in. The hundred Griset drawings are all hand-colored in this copy. The full calf binding has considerable wear chips and scuffing around the edges and joints. Rebacked with original spine labels laid on. A Fine original hand-colored lithograph by John Nugent Fitch 1840 - 1927 after a painting by his uncle Walter Hood Fitch British;1817 -1892. 15 x 23.3 cm. During his long and illustrious career as a botanical painter W. H. Fitch contributed to several of the most important publications produced during the great age of botanical exploration and discovery of the nineteenth century including Curtis' Botanical Magazine and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Undoubtedly Fitch was a major contributor to the art of botanical illustration design and horticulture. Through his drawings which were bold vibrant and exacting Fitch was able to capture the essence of the flower and thus animate the botanical specimens with very few lines. As a consummate lithographer Fitch often executed his compositions directly onto the limestone tablet to be printed directly thus requiring no intermediate study or sketch.
