Octavo three volumes xx 288pp; 1 311pp; 1 308pp 4pp ads. Publisher's paper boards title on label affixed to spine. Solid text blocks free or marks or notations. All three spines with notable wear partial loss of title all stable. Includes the bookplate of Harry Buxton Forman the notable antiquarian bookseller and forger of Georgian and Victorian first editions. This copy was sold at his estate sale at Anderson Galleries New York August 1920 lot 446. Tylney Hall by Thomas Hood is one of the earliest English works to feature black characters in a historical drama in positive roles. This work was published in 1834 the same year that slavery was abolished in the United Kingdom. Thomas Hood 1799-1845 was an English poet and humorist best known for his works "The Bridge of Sighs" and "The Song of the Shirt. A.H. Baily and Co unknown

First edition octavo three volumes; xx 288; 311; 308pp. In contemporary half calf over marbled boards with light wear only spines divided into five compartments by double gilt fillets gilt lettered titles and volume numbers to second and fourth compartments respectively all page edges marbled half titles present small bookselller's and early ownership labels to front pastedowns very minor loss to front pastedown of volume three probably through label removal light creasing to first few pages of volume three unobtrusive spotting to opening and closing leaves of each volume overall a very good clean copy. Hood's only novel was published the same year as the abolition of slavery and is centered on Walter Tyrell born in St.Kitts and raised in Georgian society by Sir Mark Tyrell with all the trials and tribulations of racial prejudice this brings. No former owners name. Illustration opposite page 22 has 1 1/2 " clossed tear. Some finger soiling in early pages. Text pages 21 to end are Japanese double fold while most of the pages before are open. They appear to have been professionally cut rather than opened by an owner. There are no "rough" edges.
