Flore française is a book by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Augustin Pyramus de Candolle that was published in 1815 in Paris. It is a work on botany classification and the plants of France. Lamarck designed the book to help identify plants using dichotomous keys which are classification tools that help users choose between opposing pairs of morphological characters. Lamarck was a botanist who became a prominent figure in French science after studying with de Jussieu and the publishing this work. He was mentored by Georges-Louis Leclerc Comte de Buffon a leading French scientist at the time. Lamarck's work was well-respected by scholars and helped him gain membership to the French Academy of Sciences in 1779. He later became a founding professor at the Musee National d'Histoire Naturelle where he was an expert on invertebrates. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. L'Imprimerie Royale Hardcover

Quarto pp 130 6 60 colour chromolithograph plates on thick stippled paper the text pages uncut and unopened the plates with a facing protective page containing the name these facing page are a bit aged and browned and fraying at the edges the plates are still clean sound and unmarked all pages are loose as issued in this form in an original green folder with silver lettering slightly worn and marked and lacking the upper ties of three. A duplicate from the Royal Horticultural lLndley Library this copy being the Reginald Cory bequest copy with two labels on the front endpaper but no other markings. Cory had a passion for plants and botany and in the early 1930s he undertook a number of plant hunting expeditions and commissioned others some of the results of which are exhibited at Dyffryn. He would also share plants with other gardens including the Cambridge Botanic Garden. Amongst other features the gardens bear evidence of his trips to Italy. Cory was a writer on horticulture a researcher and liveryman of the Ancient Guild of Gardeners and became a vice-president of the Royal Horticultural Society RHS and was a major benefactor of the Society and other botanical resources including the Cambridge Botanic Garden where his friend Humphrey Gilbert-Carter was Director. The residence of the Director the construction of which he funded in 1924 is named Cory Lodge after him. Today it houses the Cory Library and Garden Herbarium. When he died in 1934 he bequeathed his papers and manuscripts to the RHS library the Lindley Library the largest bequest they had ever received. The bequest was catalogued by the then new librarian William Stearn. Loose in folder. Good. Lucien Laveur Paperback
1751017563Stockholmiae & Amstelodami: Kiesewetter Godofr & Chatelain Z 1751. Latin text. Engraved frontispiece But see notes below octavo title page dedication page lectori botanico page 362 pages 9 engraved plates 2 full page engravings a little age-toning the occasional blemish or small mark the title page is a bit creased and stained in the gutter margin and there is offsetting from the frontispiece. which is chipped and with a closed tear repaired and mounted on a paper stub. Bound in possibly original marbled paper and more recent half calf slightly worn. Soulsby 437. The frontispiece is often lacking but the one we have here is not the usual frontispiece ! It is possibly a little smaller than the page size though this is not certain as it has been repaired and mounted; the offsetting to the title page which is obviously of some antiquity is definitely from the plate currently bound in. So - is it a variant or has it been added by a previous owner Interestingly I can only find one copy of this particular image online in the Wellcome Collection R. Burgess Portraits of doctors & scientists in the Wellcome Institute London 1973 no. 1778.10 ; listed as by Gustav Lundberg. It is "the first textbook of descriptive systematic botany and botanical Latin". It also contains Linnaeus's first published description of his binomial nomenclature. Philosophia Botanica represents a maturing of Linnaeus's thinking on botany and its theoretical foundations being an elaboration of ideas first published in his Fundamenta Botanica 1736 and Critica Botanica 1737 and set out in a similar way as a series of stark and uncompromising principles aphorismen. The book also establishes a basic botanical terminology. RARE. First Edition. Half Leather. Good. Kiesewetter, Godofr & Chatelain, Z Hardcover
018120Norwood; Stationers' Hall Court London: The Author; Simpkin Marshall Hamilton Kent & Co Ltd Quarto illustrated with 22 plates pp 4 116 deckle-edged top edge gilt endpapers a bit foxed and age-toned the ten sepia plates are foxed on their versos but the plates thenselves show only very faint traces the blank pages facing the plates have a little offsetting there is a marginal tear to the plate facing page 37 green cloth slightly scuffed the corners rubbed the spine slightly pulled at head and tail. Overall though still a very presentable copy. SCARCE. The book contains 22 leaves of plates. Ten of these are etched views of gardens or features of garden scenery one of them named as a view of Keszthely. The other ten are lithographed plans two facing each other between pp. 54 and 55 uncoloured and eight including two double-page spreads mounted on stubs with beige and green tint. Among these are plans of the Buxton Pavilion grounds Stoke Cemetery Keszthely and Yeaton Peverey. Milner succeeded his father Edward Milner as director of the Crystal Palace School of Gardening for the prospectus of which see Gardeners' Chronicle 2 April 1881 p. 437. It has been inferred by some that some of the content is based on Edward Milner's works as well as H.E. Milner's own; for example the plate facing p. 63 resembles the landscape garden designed by Edward Milner at Rangemore Hall Staffordshire. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. 195112896New York: New York Council of the Arts Sciences and Professions 1951. Three items stapled together at top left corner together with a separate leaflet totaling seven pages. Minor edge wear one item with a short closed tear. Overall very good. A group of four printed items pertaining to an effort by New York arts professionals to encourage equality for African American arts professionals in midcentury United States where the lower half of the country was still mired in Jim Crow laws. The most notable of these items is a four-panel program detailing the conference with introductory text describing the ways in which racism limits the opportunities of Black artists and scientists and the failure to put recent anti-racist court decisions into actual practice. The program for the conference lists such themes as the effects of Jim Crow policy on the arts and representation of Black subjects the deleterious effects of racism on health and welfare and how cultural standards are lowered and violence encouraged by discrimination. According to the speakers list on the fourth page of the program participants in the conference included Oliver Harrington Jacob Lawrence Julian Mayfield Paul Robeson and other artists educators scientists and musicians.<br /> <br /> Attached to this program are two handbills; one is an invitation to an opening night event featuring new works of ballet chorus calypso and drama the night before the conference. This performance took place at the Pythian on November 9 1951. The other handbill announces the program for the Annual Convention of the New York Council which appears to have been a more general event on the day after the conference on equal rights. The text on this handbill notes the suppression of free speech under McCarthyism. The last item is an 8.5-x-14-inch handbill probably a press release of sorts announcing the conference also titled "A Call to a Conference on Equal Rights for Negroes in the Arts Sciences and Professions." The language of this handbill is the same as the second page of the four-page brochure but is dated a month before the conference in October 1951.<br /> <br /> Some of the language in the program introduction and handbill merit quoting here: "In the sciences and professions the majority of Negroes are deprived of equal educational opportunities by segregation and quota systems denied employment in the professions restricted to the most menial occupations confined to ghetto areas for their private practice and thus prevented from making a full contribution to the welfare of the nation. Blacklisting character assassination political inquisitions and other forms of censorship against white artists scientists and professionals cannot be ended - so long as discrimination against Negroes and other minority group members is maintained For those who violate the Constitution and foster a policy of discrimination against Negroes are the very same persons who are responsible for censorship blacklisting and the debasement of our science and culture. It is they who tolerate and promote the campaigns of violence and brutality against the Negro people as exhibited in Cicero in the bombing of the home of a world-renowned Negro chemist in the refusal of platforms to the most outstanding American Negro artists in the ‘legal lynchings’ of many young men guilty of nothing more than being Negroes. American culture Cannot live in the face of such terror against a large segment of our people. Standards of truth and humanism cannot be maintained in our cultural media so long as the truth of the Negro people's lives is denied expression. Nor can there be decent standards for white professionals in many fields so long as a reservoir of Negro unemployed is used to depress salaries and rates."<br /> <br /> Surprisingly OCLC is silent on any material from the conference though we doubt this group of ephemera is a unique survival.
