1638018234Roma: Pier Ant Facciotti 1638. Small thick quarto pp 12 520 26 illustrated with an engraved title page an engraved frontispiece though here bound in after the preliminary pages and 45 plates of 46 - lacking the plate which occupied pages 55/56 some age-toning and slight foxing throughout the plates a bit more browned but without the intense browning often found in this book overall quite tight internally one preliminary page and pages 395-398 protruding slightly and a little chipped and frayed at the margins full vellum binding probably original rather used and marked but quite sound and firm the upper and lower cover a bit warped and bowed the front hinge cracked but firm and showing traces of old glue. The first Italian edition. Ferrari 1584 - 1655 was an Italian Jesuit and professor in Rome and a botanist. He devoted himself till 1632 to the study and cultivation of ornamental plants and published De Florum Cultura which was illustrated with copperplates by amongst others Anna Maria Vaiani possibly the first female copper-engraver. The first book deals with the design and maintenance of the garden and garden equipment. The second book provides descriptions of the different flowers while the third book deals with the culture of these flowers. The fourth book continues with a treatise on the use and beauty of the flower species including their different varieties and mutations. The plants featured in Ferrari's research came from Cardinal Francesco Barberini's private botanical garden the Horti Barberini a garden which was under the care of Ferrari. Several Cape bulbs are illustrated for the first time - most notably Haemanthus coccinea but also Amaryllis bella-donna Brunsvigia orientalis and Ferraria crispa. Hunt Library Catalogue rather downbeat in its comment - "The fame rests more on the quality of the engraved plates than on their contribution to botanical knowledge". Perhaps so but horticulturally I feel this is a fundamental work for its period. Nissen BBI 620; Pritzel 2877. Vellum. Good. Pier Ant Facciotti Hardcover

Very attractive 19th-century French red glazed boards red morocco spine lettered in gilt directly two insignificant worm-holes on lower hinge leading nowhere; trifle wear to binding extremities. Completely unsophisticated. First printing of "Telliamed" in every way a remarkable book. Disguised as an Oriental fantasy it contains perhaps the earliest appearance of one of the most important of all evolution speculations namely the so-called ultra-neptunian theory: that the entire Earth was and is a marine deposit and that all life on land originated from creatures of the sea. Maillet hypothesized that the earth was once entirely covered with water and that the water gradually evaporated into space causing land masses to appear. Maillet also created an ingenious methodology to calculate the age of the Earth: he concluded that the Earth is 2 billion years old evolutionists today consider this figure to be more like 4.5 billion. It is known that Buffon Lamark Cuvier and Darwin read this book and that they were very much influenced by Maillet's unorthodox "heretical" views. Well aware that such an immense figure would incur the wrath of the Church de Maillet presented his conclusions in the guise of a dialogue between a French missionary and an Eastern mystic named Telliamed an anagram for the author's last name i.e. de Maillet spelled backwards. The manuscript remained unpublished until a decade after Maillet's death. In order to present his radical conclusions in the guise of an Oriental tale Maillet interspersed monsters and mythological creatures into his text. Overtly anti-Christian "Telliamed" dismisses the Flood of the Old Testament as a fable because rainfall that lasted forty days would have been insignificant to submerge entire mountains. Maillet asserted that the Earth's history could not be read from the Bible but through the rocks themselves.

¶ With uncanny prescience Maillet describes how species have overlapping physical characteristics that suggested a common life origin namely the sea. Through a Oriental mystic we are told that: "The little Wings had under their Belly and which like their Fins helped them to walk in the Sea became Feet and served them to walk on Land."

¶ REFERENCES: Caillet No. 7009. 1819020733Princes Street Corner of Gerard Street Soho: J. Callow 1819. First edition. Illustrated with 12 engraved plates several of them folding octavo pp xxiv 579 i slight age-toning to the front endpaper the half-title and the frontispiece otherwise very clean internally neatly bound in a recent brown half-leather and cloth. With the bookplate of Robert Washington Oates on the front endpaper. Sir William Lawrence 1st Baronet FRCS FRS 1783 -1867 was an English surgeon who became President of the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Serjeant Surgeon to the Queen. In his mid-thirties he published two books of his lectures which contained pre-Darwinian ideas on man's nature and effectively on evolution. In 1819 the second book known by its short title of the Natural history of Man caused a storm of disapproval from conservative and clerical quarters for its supposed atheism and within the medical profession because he advocated a materialist rather than vitalist approach to human life. He was linked by his critics with such other 'revolutionaries' as Thomas Paine and Lord Byron. It was "the first great scientific issue that widely seized the public imagination in Britain a premonition of the debate over Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection exactly forty years later". It contained some remarkable anticipations of later thought but was ruthlessly suppressed. To this day many historical accounts of evolutionary ideas do not mention Lawrence's contribution. He is omitted for example from many of the Darwin biographies from some evolution textbooks essay collections and even from accounts of pre-Darwinian science and religion. Although the only idea of interest which Darwin found in Lawrence was that of sexual selection in man the influence on Alfred Russel Wallace was more positive. Wallace "found in Lawrence a possible mechanism of organic change that of spontaneous variation leading to the formation of new species". First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good. J. Callow Hardcover

"The first publication on plants from all of North America above Mexico and the first to publish plants from the Pacific Coast Pursh's Flora includes more than 3000 species and 470 genera including the first descriptions of more than 100 species collected by the Lewis and Clark expedition" ANB. Sabin 66728. Pursh a German botanist came to America in 1799 as a traveler collector gardener and landscape artist. From 1803 until about 1805 he was in charge of William Hamilton's estate near Philadelphia before becoming employed in the botanizing expeditions of Benjamin Smith Barton. From 1809 to 1810 he headed Hosack's Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. In 1811 Pursh traveled to England where he produced his Flora under the patronage of A. B. Lambert to whom the work is dedicated. Pursh relied upon the Lewis and Clark specimens entrusted to M'Mahon for many of his descriptions of the Pacific coast plants; he also consulted some forty-one other botanical collections for his research. Apperently William Hooker the artist of Salisbury's Paradisus Londinensis was responsible for a good portion of both the drawings and engravings. Printing of the Flora Americae Septentrionalis was completed in late 1813 as the Linnaean Society possesses a presentation copy dated 21 December 1813. . In Rays time understanding of creation was governed by the account in the Bible. It was thought that the earth dated from about 5000BC and that fossils were formed in nature as imitations of shells fish or other creatures but were not a genuine creature. Rays observations of the changing coastlines around Britain and his fossil excavations led him to question both of these. He published his work on Fossils in his Miscellaneous Discourses 1692. The work quickly sold out and a considerably enlarged second edition with a new title was published the next year which is the copy we offer here . In particular he put forward that fossils were the remains of creatures that were now extinct going against the commonly held view that all creatures that God created at the beginning still existed. Simeon Ackroyd Shaw 1785 - 1859 was a 19th-century English scientific writer industrial historian and teacher. He spent his working life in the Staffordshire Potteries now the city of Stoke-on-Trent England. Shaw originated in Lancashire and as a young man he arrived in the Potteries to work on the Potteries Gazette and Newcastle-under-Lyme Advertiser newspaper. After some 20 years of newspaper and printing work living in Wolstanton he then went into teaching. He ran several teaching academies in the district. RARE. The first edition of this iconic book was 1914 and the second edition two years later in 1916. The title page to our copy is definitely that of the first edition - it has the misprint 'Illustraions' and no English date; whereas in the second edition the date appears and the misprint is corrected. Our copy has 109 plates which is definitely correct for the second edition; however the only copy of the first edition online is that of Jerry Stanoff's Rare Oriental Book Company which states 101 plates - now is his copy lacking or is our own copy a mixture of editions ! I can find no copy of the first edition in a library so I can't corroborate this at the moment. "Isuke Tsuboi 1843-1925 a man who devoted himself to the research of bamboo for nearly forty years and was known as "Japans foremost bamboo guru". In 1881 he set up a farm to experiment with bamboo planting. Over the many years of his hard work Tsuboi accumulated fruitful knowledge in bamboo species and their phytogeographic patterns. He also developed efficient planting methods identified the causes of withering and discovered efficient ways to fight against pests. During his years of research Tsuboi made frequent trips between Taiwan China and Japan which demonstrate the seriousness and diligence with which he pursued the study of bamboo. He was the first man to build a bamboo specimen garden in Japan a place that displayed his categorization of all native bamboo species in Japan. Botanists directors of bamboo groves and bamboo lovers of his time all came to marvel at the richness of his collection. Sadly after Tsuboi passed away the garden was abandoned and then vanished in disrepair. Tsubois Illustrations of the Japanese Species of Bamboo stands as one of the great achievements of his research. The book depicts various species and morphology of bamboo and contains intricate sketches of their inner parts. Even by todays standard this book still retains great value as a reference guide.". That year saw sustained focus on hypersonics ballistic missile trajectories spacecraft propulsion and heat transfer under extreme atmospheric conditions as the U.S. sought to stabilize its strategic position after the 1957 Sputnik crisis and ahead of the 1960 Mercury program. Research in these volumes was underwritten by military contracts NASA collaboration established in 1958 and Cold War exigencies. Light foxing to several wrappers particularly July issue; some edge wear and surface abrasions. Two issues show sticker residue at spine or lower edge. Interiors uniformly clean bindings firm and covers largely bright and intact. Overall very good condition. The studies record the technical environment that produced early American satellite programs and later lunar navigation systems linking university laboratories defense contractors and federal research agencies. unknown
