"This is an account of the excavation of a Greek sanctuary in the south-west corner of the mainland of Asia Minor opposite Rhodes--once known as the Carian Chersonese. The excavations took place in 1959-1960. This is the first Greek temple of any size uncovered in that part of Asia Minor and the discovery of the site of Kastabos whose existence was known from book V of Diodorus' world history has entailed the re-siting of several ancient towns in the region. The sanctuary itself whose main buildings date from c. 300 B. C. was dedicated to the Goddess Hemithea. It adds to our knowledge of a special sort of Greek shrine which was popular in the early Hellenistic age and is a perfect instance of a religious gathering place designed for a short well attended festival. The excavations show that although it was an Ionic temple the style of the great contemporary temples in Ionia such as that at Ephesus has been modified and the design is somewhat similar in plan and proportion to that of the temple of Epidaurus. In particular the discovery of a decorative screen with little shrines round the temple area throws new light on Greek architectural complexes."; 180 pages . Cambridge University Press hardcover

201016646Cambridge University Press. 2010. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Bumping to top of spine. DJ has some minor edgewear with some creasing along edges.; 270 pages; This book examines the connection between political and religious power in the pagan Roman Empire through a study of senatorial religion. Presenting a new collection of historical epigraphic prosopographic and material evidence it argues that as Augustus turned to religion to legitimize his powers senators in turn also came to negotiate their own power as well as that of the emperor partly in religious terms. In Rome the body of the senate and priesthoods helped to maintain the religious power of the senate; across the Empire senators defined their magisterial powers by following the model of emperors and by relying on the piety of sacrifice and benefactions. The ongoing participation and innovations of senators confirm the deep ability of imperial religion to engage the normative symbolic and imaginative aspects of religious life among senators. . 0521897246 .
