194353630Tunisia 1943. Nearly Fine. Five-pointed yellow cloth star sewn onto plain beige cloth 7.3 by 9 cm. Yellow dye somewhat faded else in fine state of preservation.<br /> <br /> Specimen of the yellow star imposed on the Jewish population of Tunisia in March 1943 as a mark of the slave laboror. Tunisia was the only Islamic country to come under Nazi rule at first indirectly through the Vichy regime in France between 1940 and its liberation by Allied forces on May 7 1943. In response to the Allied invasion of Algeria and Morocco German and Italian forces invaded Tunisia on November 9 1942. By the end of November the Germans took the first anti-Jewish move by arresting four of the community leaders including Moïse Borgel the president of the Jewish congregation. "In addition to the governor-general's sympathetic attitude -- and in some degree to the pro-Jewish attitude of Bey Sidi Mohammed al-Mounsaf -- the Italians also in practice interfered with the application of the anti-Jewish laws" E.H. The dignitaries were released after a week following the intervention of the mayor of Tunis and the Italian consul. Because of objections by the Italians the edict to wear the star does not appear to have been generally enforced with rigor and was only formally imposed in two cities Sfax and Tunis. While 5000 Jews had originally been put on forced labor in thirty locations and camps along the front line "at the time of the collapse and surrenter in early May 1943 only sixteen hundred Jews were employed on forced labor" E.H. Given the relatively small labor force and the lack of zeal in imposing the anti-Jewish ordinances it is clear why so few of these yellow badges have survived. References: I. Gutman ed. Scrapbook filled with letters cards printed announcements photographs and invitations put together by Irma Cleveland Matron of the Triangle Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star/ Original string-tied oblong album of buff boards with a laid down color illustration. The Order of the Eastern Star is a Masonic appendant body open to both men and women. It was established in 1850 172 years ago by lawyer and educator Rob Morris a noted Freemason and adopted and approved as an appendant body of the Masonic Fraternity in 1873. The order is based on some teachings from the Bible and is open to people of all religious beliefs. It has approximately 10000 chapters in twenty countries and approximately 500000 members under its General Grand Chapter. It is still going strong.Members of the Order of the Eastern Star are aged 18 and older; men must be Master Masons and women must have specific relationships with Masons. Originally a woman would have to be the daughter widow wife sister or mother of a Master Mason. The Order now allows other relatives as well as allowing Job's Daughters Rainbow Girls Members of the Organization of Triangles NY only and members of the Constellation of Junior Stars NY only to become members when of age. Irma Cleveland and her husband Harry to a lesser extent was very active in this organization. Basically this album covers 1931 to 1933 but there are at least 100 printed items. Apparently she rose to the rank of Matron highest rank possible in her Lodge of the Order of the Eastern Star; Triangle Lodge No. 548 in Venice California. But she was a busy gal as there are printed materials from Lodges all over Southern California: Coronado Santa Monica Palms Culver City Beverly Hills Ocean Park Long Beach and the Grand Lodge. There is an interesting original photograph of initiates going through the ceremony at the Long Beach Lodge. It is not clear what they are wearing but some kind of Greenman costume. Basically the Order of the Eastern Star was a way for married couples to become Freemasons together as the Scottish Rite etc. was just for men. N.p. hardcover
4111STAR OF THE WEST. Star of the West was a steamship built in 1862 by Jeremiah Simonson for Cornelius Vanderbilt and it frequently traveled to Nicaragua. In 1861 the Federal government hired her to ship supplies to Fort Sumter but it was fired on by cadets from The Citadel. D. 2pg. 8 x 12. June 16 1855. Punta Arenas Nicaragua. A contemporary copy of a financial agreement for the steamer Star Of The West. The document states in part In the Article of Agreement dated March the twentieth one thousand eight hundred and fifty five entered into between me and acting legally for Michael Baker of South Dartmouth Mass as his attorney of the first part and Capt E W Turner of the Steam Ship Star of the West of New York of the second part it was agreed to appoint Mr. Charles Morgan of New York to be the approver of the names on the Bond for the Sum of Twenty five thousand dollars to be given by the said E W Turner pledging payment on receipt of the first sample of the Guano at any port from the Island or Islands in the Pacific Ocean the Geographical position of which the said Michael Baker and myself have bound ourselves to furnish and have for ever transferred all right and title thereto as set forth in the Article of Agreement. The document has three filing folds and some ink blotches and it is in very good condition. unknown

This contains a full novel "The Forging" by Lilker a Sahaj novel which is a sister zine to "Sahaj Collected." It also contains Reunion Rebel Style by Leslye Lilker art by Alice Jones P.S. Nim and Gee Moaven and poetry by Trinette Kern. Worldcat/OCLC locates no holdings for any of Lilker's IDIC series of zines. From Lilker's preface to this novel "For the unknown fan who leafed through a copy of IDIC at the Baltimore mini-con and then made the mistake of asking the group gathered around the table 'What's a Sahaj' here is an ever-so-brief summary of the events covered in IDICs 1-4: Sahaj ten-year old natural son of Spock and the Vulcan ambassadress to Ventura is sent back to Vulcan when his mother dies. He shows up aboard the Big E. Instant clash between father and son for not only is Spock repulsed by kids in general but as Sahaj is going out of his way to be obnoxious this particular kid really turns him off. Add to that: 1 Sahaj and McCoy hit it off 2 Sarek's reaction to his grandson 3 Sahaj's reaction to Sarek 4 I'Chiya 5 Sahaj's reaction to Vulcan in general 6 A message tape from Jim Kirk announcing Spock's death 7 Sahaj holding Jim Kirk responsible 8 Spock's return 9 Sahaj's abrupt learning of a parental bond 10 Spock's decision to take Sahaj camping on The Forge -- mix well and add two dashes of plomeek logic bake at a slow temperature for two years and you've caught up with the rest of IDIC's readers. Now if you're thoroughly confused all I can tell you is to either borrow copies from friends or be patient and wait for the Sahaj Collected that I'm planning on doing. Leslye Lilker unknown
