Il merito dottrinario fondamentale di Crowley è l'aver saputo riprendere in mano e ristrutturare, adattandole alla sensibilità contemporanea, ma senza tradirle, le antiche e semi-dimenticate tradizioni magiche fondamentali: quella occidentale incarnata dall'insegnamento della Golden Dawn - la famosa società segreta britannica - e quella orientale riportata alla luce dall'Ordo Templi Orientis che si ispirava alle dottrine tantriche della "mano sinistra", fondate sull'uso magico del sesso. Sulla base di queste esperienze, e di altre raccolte dalla sua erudizione magica senza eguali, Crowley seppe elaborare un proprio sistema originale, la dottrina di Thelema, la cui coerenza e suggestione sono tali da licitare anche negli scettici il sospetto che esso sia - come egli sosteneva frutto di diretta ispirazione divina.
