182591London: Jones & Co 1825. First Edition in Miniature. Leather. Near Fine. Miniature 2.6" x 4.5" rebound in full brown leather with gold stamping and labels 5 hubs engraved frontispiece of Dr Saml Johnson engraved title page 160 pages. Rare Miniature of the larger original published in 1759. Rasselas is Dr. Johnson's version of a morality tale about what constitutes True Happiness that rivals Voltaire's Candide. The volumes' working title was "The Choice of Life." The name "Rasselas" means "The Chief" of a tribe in exotic Abyssinia. The Great Cham & Lexicographer was pro-emancipation and had a black manservant whom he treated very well. This minor classic was supposedly written by the good Doctor to defray expenses expected with his mother's funeral. In fact there are signs of extensive revisions in early editions that suggest greater literary intentions. Rebound in fine brown morocco with gilt stamped title and author on the spine. Foxed engraved frontispiece and title page otherwise pages bright and legible with a tight binding tight. Lower margin of page 7 roughly torn away but not affecting the clear text. 17570Both on her letterhead 'WALTERS ANSON R.M.S.' 48 Parkstone Avenue Parkstone Dorset. 6 and 11 February 1950. Both letters 2pp. 12mo. Both in good condition lightly-aged the second with the first page lightly crossed through in pencil. The letters relate to work done for the firm of her brother-in-law Marcus Adams described in his Times obituary as 'the outstanding child photographer of his day and photographer to the Royal Family for more than 30 years' at 43 Dover Street Mayfair. She begins the first letter by explaining that she has 'endeavoured to make the Woodall miniature like the snapshot but unless they are really satisfied I had better do another. It is very difficult when something different from the photo is wanted but I don't mind how long it takes if only I can get what they want as they have lost the boy If I have to do another please return this with another piece of ivory I have no more so that I shall be sure of getting colour of hair right.' She continues with more business talk before concluding with a discussion of politics attacking the Labour government as an 'extravagant incompetent horde'. In the second letter she discusses 'the Hillmans group' and her willingness to do 'a specimen of Tuckwell' 'such a bright very much alive & happy child'. The letter concludes with a discussion of colour in her work and the importance of pleasing the mother of the subject. Both on her letterhead ('WALTERS ANSON, R.M.S.'), 48 Parkstone Avenue, Parkstone, Dorset. 6 and 11 February 1950. unknown

No. 37 OF 126 COPIES. 75 x 50 mm. 3 x 2". 2 p.l. 23 1 pp. 1 leaf.
Tan paper with a paper label over a 17th century printed fragment. WITH THREE LEAVES FROM MINIATURE BOOKS: one leaf from the "thumb Bible" "History of the Bible" New London: W & J Bolles 1831; one from "The Shakespeare Glossary" Glasgow: Bryce Stokes 1904; and one from "Dew-Drops" New York City: American Tract Society ca. 1847. With an additional fragment of a larger leaf tipped in at the front. As new.

This delightful entirely handmade production features a list of miniature leaf books and three original leaves from miniature books published between 1831-1904. Since the 1970s our collaborating husband-and-wife book artists Peter and Donna Thomas have been making paper printing with a hand press and hand binding books. The present book was assembled between 1997-2005 and then printed the Thomases humorously tell us "on a cranky old Pearl treadle press" using Joe Halton's linotype and Neuland types. All paper was handmade by Peter Thomas; as an artistic choice by the bookmakers the endpapers include fragments of paper from the 1686 book "Keble's Reports" the same work from which the fragments on the cover and frontispiece originate. The three leaves included here provide an excellent representation of the charming miniature books of the 19th century. They include a leaf from a "Thumb Bible" the miniature volumes containing biblical excerpts that enjoyed considerable popularity during the period; a leaf from an "Ellen Terry" book issued by Glasgow printer David Bryce Jr. who produced these books using the relatively new technology of photographic reduction and named them after the most famous actress of the day; and an American example produced by the non-denominational American Tract Society which published several miniature religious books through the mid-19th century. This publication is made especially charming by its size which of course is entirely appropriate for the volume's contents. Peter and Donna Thomas unknown
