17570Both on her letterhead 'WALTERS ANSON R.M.S.' 48 Parkstone Avenue Parkstone Dorset. 6 and 11 February 1950. Both letters 2pp. 12mo. Both in good condition lightly-aged the second with the first page lightly crossed through in pencil. The letters relate to work done for the firm of her brother-in-law Marcus Adams described in his Times obituary as 'the outstanding child photographer of his day and photographer to the Royal Family for more than 30 years' at 43 Dover Street Mayfair. She begins the first letter by explaining that she has 'endeavoured to make the Woodall miniature like the snapshot but unless they are really satisfied I had better do another. It is very difficult when something different from the photo is wanted but I don't mind how long it takes if only I can get what they want as they have lost the boy If I have to do another please return this with another piece of ivory I have no more so that I shall be sure of getting colour of hair right.' She continues with more business talk before concluding with a discussion of politics attacking the Labour government as an 'extravagant incompetent horde'. In the second letter she discusses 'the Hillmans group' and her willingness to do 'a specimen of Tuckwell' 'such a bright very much alive & happy child'. The letter concludes with a discussion of colour in her work and the importance of pleasing the mother of the subject. Both on her letterhead ('WALTERS ANSON, R.M.S.'), 48 Parkstone Avenue, Parkstone, Dorset. 6 and 11 February 1950. unknown
2005ST20505-13Santa Cruz California: Peter and Donna Thomas 2005. No. 37 OF 126 COPIES. 75 x 50 mm. 3 x 2". 2 p.l. 23 1 pp. 1 leaf.
Tan paper with a paper label over a 17th century printed fragment. WITH THREE LEAVES FROM MINIATURE BOOKS: one leaf from the "thumb Bible" "History of the Bible" New London: W & J Bolles 1831; one from "The Shakespeare Glossary" Glasgow: Bryce Stokes 1904; and one from "Dew-Drops" New York City: American Tract Society ca. 1847. With an additional fragment of a larger leaf tipped in at the front. As new.

This delightful entirely handmade production features a list of miniature leaf books and three original leaves from miniature books published between 1831-1904. Since the 1970s our collaborating husband-and-wife book artists Peter and Donna Thomas have been making paper printing with a hand press and hand binding books. The present book was assembled between 1997-2005 and then printed the Thomases humorously tell us "on a cranky old Pearl treadle press" using Joe Halton's linotype and Neuland types. All paper was handmade by Peter Thomas; as an artistic choice by the bookmakers the endpapers include fragments of paper from the 1686 book "Keble's Reports" the same work from which the fragments on the cover and frontispiece originate. The three leaves included here provide an excellent representation of the charming miniature books of the 19th century. They include a leaf from a "Thumb Bible" the miniature volumes containing biblical excerpts that enjoyed considerable popularity during the period; a leaf from an "Ellen Terry" book issued by Glasgow printer David Bryce Jr. who produced these books using the relatively new technology of photographic reduction and named them after the most famous actress of the day; and an American example produced by the non-denominational American Tract Society which published several miniature religious books through the mid-19th century. This publication is made especially charming by its size which of course is entirely appropriate for the volume's contents. Peter and Donna Thomas unknown
36477probably England 20th century. An 18th century scene showing a man and woman in elaborate dress surprised in a boudoir by another woman entering the room. 4 inches in diameter. Glazed and framed in black wood and gilt metal frame of earlier date. An 18th century scene showing a man and woman in elaborate dress surprised in a boudoir by another woman entering the room. 4 inches in diameter. An amusing jeu d'esprit very possibly done by the artist to oblige the owner of a old and previously empty frame. The elegant scene is not very lacivious--everybody is fully dressed although the surprised lady who turns away from the evidently unwelcome visitor shows a fair amount of leg and the gentleman is holding his tricorn hat in what might be regarded as a somewhat compromising position. The artist an Englishman born at the end of the 19th century studied with the eminent Walter Sickert and went on to exhibit landscapes and portraits at various prestigious venues in England and France. unknown

22106'Friday Evg'. No place or date. 4pp 16mo. Bifolium on light-green paper. In good condition lightly aged. The letter begins: 'My Dear Miss de Witte Of course I found the Yankee Poems directly after You were Gone – too carefully put by. Do not put mine away too carefully – as I want You to really read them. Poetry of France The sad lines of Marguerite d'Ecosse in the notes at the end are original & perhaps will stroke You – as the mournful Subject did me. The lines have been translated into German French &c.' The news of the family the de Witte named has made her 'heart ache' and as Costello is sure she and her 'kind Mamma do something to help them' she asks her to 'let them have the enclosed trifle. It is nothing but being unexpected and sure to be useful in some way may be acceptable'. She asks her to 'say nothing about it to any one – as it is of no Consequence and I coul dnot offer it except with other Contributions'. She will 'look for the Scandinavian poetry & may find it. Longfellow gives some in his Poets of Europe'. She ends in hopes of hearing 'better news of colds &c'. 'Friday Evg'. No place or date. unknown
