Generally near fine some fading to slipcases. <br /> <br /> 6 nicely printed miniatures from the antiquarian bookshop owner and printer Robert L. Merriam of Conway Massachusetts. He published a series of 13 of these basically his attempt to create stories similar to those moral tales from Victorian times. Includes:<br /> <br /> The Darling Twins Pleasant Beth J. Hamilton Rose Moses Washington John Carson and The Stories of the Ants. All except the last title are limited to 1000 copies with The Ants limited to 350 and signed at the rear by Merriam. Robert L. Rare remarkable "pocket" London almanack; an entirely engraved miniature publication for the year 1788. The almanac contains an explanation of its use on the title page four full-page portraits of the King of Prussia the Prince of Orange the Duke of Brunswick and the Duke of York common notes including the dominical letters golden number and religious festive days for 1788 beneath a half-page view of St. Paul's Cathedral a calendar an overview of all British Kings and Queens and the dates of their reign a list of mayors and sheriffs 1767-1788 one page listing bank holidays and an overview of the Royal family King George III and Queen Charlotte and their children can be found on the final page. The long series of the London Almanack is according to Bondy of special interest for the beautiful bindings which were issued or commissioned by the publishers themselves.The binding shows signs of wear with some minor loss of material around the foot of the spine and a small worm hole in the fore edge of the back board. The final page shows a light red stain slightly affecting the text. Lacking its matching decorative slipcase. They are of special interest for their fine publisher's bindings but also for their striking views of London.With a manucript owner's inscription on the front blank endpaper recto of the engraved title page in pencil "A. S. Wossley" and pencil annotations between the printed lines of the calendar. The slipcase shows minor signs of wear the binding is slightly damaged at the head and foot of the spine not affecting the integrity of the binding. The work is a so-called "almanach chantant" a miniature almanac of less than 3 centimetres in size with 64 pages and illustrations. Typically intended for women they were usually beautifully bound and contained poetry and love songs. The present example which has curiously been bound upside down contains several illustrated love songs some of which are allegorical and a calendar. The illustrations depict men and women engaged in a variety of different activities dressed in the fashion of the time. Several issues of the almanac were published in the same year with a different number of illustrations and some with the publisher's name on the title page.The boards and spine have been somewhat rubbed.
