1890307318Constantinople Istanbul: Probably Sébah and Joaillier 1890. Perhaps the most well-known image from the photographer Pascal Sébah or his son Jean a view outside a Turkish coffee shop of a group of men drinking coffee and smoking.

At the center of the image is a seated man with a white beard holding a cup in one hand and the hose of a hookah in the other. A waiter holds a glass-bottomed hookah for him. More men sit on either side of the central figure. However it is a man on the far right of the image staring fiercely at the camera a pipe in his mouth that adds drama to the scene returning the gaze of the viewer. This man and the waiter who are in front of the main row of men also add a nice compositional element dividing the foreground from the background a second image taken on the same day—based on the foliage and the shape of the knot of rope on the cafe wall—lacks these two elements and it is much less successful from an artistic perspective.

Adding further interest to the careful view are the ghostly faces of two men inside the cafe who look at the scene through dusty windows. This photograph both documents a part of everyday life for men in Turkey but the subjects return the naked stare of the camera and look across space and time at the viewer of the photograph. It's an image whose meaning is as much about looking as seeing.

While this image is titled in the negative it is not signed by the photographer. However other prints of this image are signed Sébah and Joaillier. The placement of that signature not present on this print over the left foot of the staring man suggests this is an earlier printing of the photograph. The quality of the print argues against this being printed from a copy negative. Those facts could argue that this could be an image by the founder of the firm the Turk Pascal Sébah 1823–1886. However Pascal is primarily known for his studio work. His son Jean took over the business and added Polycarpe Joallier as a partner soon after. They are much better known for outdoor street views hence the attribution to Sébah and Joaillier. An image with excellent tonality measuring 10-1/4 by 8-1/8 inches on a 14 by 11-7/8 mount. There is a bit of staining to the lower corners of the mount and the mount is slightly concave but overall this is an exceptional print of one of finest images from the best-known Turkish photography studio of its time. [Probably Sébah and Joaillier] unknown

1957List1012Nyack: Fellowship of Reconciliation 1957. First Edition. Small 4to 10 ¼ x 6 ¾ and each 16 pp. A fine copy unread with slightest normal tanning but exceptionally preserved overall. Fine. Barry Sy. A year after moving its headquarters from New York City to Nyack New York the Fellowship of Reconciliation - an interfaith group founded in 1915 with pacifist roots - published this an illustrated story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott which helped introduce the country to Martin Luther King Jr. The comic was produced by a number of artists under the direction of Al Capp who is best known for L'il Abner. The FoR had a year earlier assigned the white Methodist minister Glenn E. Smiley to assist the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Montgomery bus boycott. Smiley as well as executive secretary and director of publications Alfred Hassler - a prolific anti-war writer - directed the production of this comic book with the help of Capp's studio who assigned the artist Sy Barry to illustrate the work. Dr. King contributed to and endorsed the work himself offering several editorial suggestions. Besides telling the story of King and the boycott the comic introduced the principles of nonviolence and nonviolent resistance. John Lewis cited the work as an inspiration for his three-part graphic novel series March.

Through grant funding the FoR was able to produce an initial run of 250000 copies which were distributed through a network of civil rights groups churches and schools. Offered here is a pristine original copy of the first edition distinguishable from later reprints by the presence of a "For Additional Copies Contact:" stamp on the rear cover listing the address of the Philadelphia area FoR office. FoR staff in particular Jim Lawson and Glenn Smiley distributed the comic throughout the south to younger audience members while giving workshops on nonviolence. The FoR produced a second version drawn by a different artist for Latin American audiences.

Despite the comic's importance very few original copies have survived we locate no others for sale at the time of this writing. The comic historian and artist Tom Christopher posted an article about it on his website in 2004 which led to a revival in interest and eventually additional reprints and translations.

Overall a pristine copy of a very important comic book which helped introduce and define the Civil Rights Movement and its messages of nonviolence and nonviolent resistance. 197016443JCulver City: Metro-Golwyn-Mayer Studios 1970s. The original "Myrna Loy Building" metal sign from the M.G.M. Hollywood Studio lot. In the 1970s the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio started naming various buildings after their classic film stars. Myrna Loy was alive and well at the time of the naming of her building. This sign was acquired by a gentleman who worked as a carpenter on the lot for many years. His accompanying letter reads: During the middle 1980's 85 to 89 I Michael McGovern worked at the old M.G.M. lot Studios in Culver City California in the Permanent Construction Dept. The lot was sold several times in this time frame. At one point before the now Sony Studios it was owned and named Lorimar Telepictues. When the lot was Lorimar Telepictures they were painting and changing the M.G.M. lot to the new Lorimar "look." Thus the signs Blue and Gold naming the building after the old M.G.M. stars were taken down and replaced with the new signs brown and white that matched the Lorimar colors. I asked my boss if it was OK to keep the signs I changed and he said it was fine with him. Myrna Loy is best known for her portrayal of "Nora Charles" in six Thin Man films with William Powell of the 1930s but also starred in Manhattan Melodrama Libeled Lady Test Pilot The Best Years of our Lives Cheaper by the Dozen and From the Terrace. Her film career spanned more than 50 years Accompanied by a copy of Mr. McGovern's "Prop Maker" ID card. The sign measures 18 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches and presents with some obvious wear from the elements like extremely small areas of rust and signs of use overall in excellent condition. Today the studio lot is owned by Sony and it houses both Sony Pictures and Columbia Pictures. The Myrna Loy Building which was the old MGM sound department exists and it still proudly bears her name. The presence of taxidermy and stone-hutch accents reflects the hunting-lodge aesthetic prevalent among the American industrial elite of the 1950s.
Architectural Photography Technique: The Behrens-Herberger studio demonstrates mastery of interior depth-of-field and light-balancing. The use of three distinct perspectives View A B and C provides a 360-degree topographical understanding of the space moving from intimate hearth-side details to broad-room circulation and layout.
Elite Provenance: These prints originate from the estate of Elene B. Roberson daughter of August A. Busch Jr. As primary documents of the family's private environment they offer rare insight into the lifestyle and aesthetic preferences of the president of one of America's most significant corporate dynasties.

Technical Features:
Process: Original silver-gelatin development exhibiting the characteristic tonal range and depth of pre-digital architectural commissions.
Artist Attribution: Each mount is hand-signed and dated in pencil by the studio certifying them as original exhibition or archival mounts rather than later commercial reproductions.
State: Image size 13⅜ × 10½ inches on original 19½ × 14 inch mounts.

Bibliographic & Archival Note: While smaller promotional images or newspaper clippings of Busch family residences may exist these large-scale studio-mounted prints were likely produced as a private commission for the family's own historical record.
