TOGETHER WITH THE RARE ORIGINAL . . . CLOTH COVERED PADDED CLAM-SHELL BOX . . This is a classic album of 50 images showing Japan's most famous and historic landscapes and landmark images. The majority have English captions and negative numbers. . It contains hand-tinted album photographs of famous gardens ponds tea houses temples shrines roads bridges Torii gates lakes Yokohama & Kamakura views of main streets the Great Bronze Buddha Mt. Fuji & other mountains waterfalls rapids rivers harbors Nagasaki house interiors Japanese beauties . Album pages are all gilt edges photo size:25.8 x 20 cm. page size: 34.5 x 26 cm. photos are laid down on both sides of each page. Each photo has a white cloth hinge some still have the original tissue guards as usual wrinkles near the hinge & corners area dog ears all unfolded small closed tears & the usual signs of minor age & use. . Many photos have a Romanized Japanese or English caption in the negative either in the lower left or right corner along with negative numbers. . Each photograph was skillfully and tastefully hand-colored with pastels for the most part. He avoided that bright red aniline used in the Meiji period his colorations reflect the subtle elegant and tasteful perspective on Japanese color application a rare commodity during that period. . The salesman is a shop worker the older man seated . at the desk is the Joji boss he sits . with his Sanban/Soroban bamboo calculator at the . ready seated at his desk with a pencil on his ear. . Various cloth rolls are here and there. In the . background are several cloth examples draped. . THE PHOTOGRAPHER: TAMAMURA Kozaburo 1856-1923: This is the work of Tokyo/Yokohama photographer TAMAMURA Kozaburo studio. . Per Wikipedia: "Tamamura Kozaburo was a Japanese photographer. In 1874 he opened a photographic studio in Asakusa Tokyo and subsequently moved to Yokohama in 1883 opening his most successful studio. He was an originator of the Yokohama Shashin photographic scene. His studio was still operating in 1909." . It's a well-known fact that Japanese photographers of the epoch sold traded exchanged and used photographs of several contemporary photographers in their albums. . THE ELEGANTLY HAND-PAINTED AND DECORATED LACQUER ALBUM: . This is a highly decorative and elaborately gold-lacquer hand painted album over wood covers both are in superbly immaculate condition. With full leather original spine laid down over black cloth with gold decorations and "ALBUM" stamped in gilt. . . The front cover is superbly hand-painted and illustrated with gold-tinted lacquer showing Mt. Fuji a small village below which is a bamboo grove and river. There are three Konotori Japanese stork with gold-lacquered legs and hand-carved in white bone with stunning wings necks & heads. One is in flight the other two are beside the river each in a unique pose. . The back cover is also stunningly gold and red hand-painted lacquer. It is illustrated with an elaborate butterfly Praying Mantis wasp bug and sprigs of leaves. . CONTAINED IN THE RARE & ORIGINAL CALICO-PRINTED COTTON CLOTH CLAM-SHELL FOLDING BOX: . This superb photograph album is contained in the original hand-made box from Tamamura's Yokohama studio. It is red cloth lined padded and quite clean. The top cover is a bit dusty as usual. The hinges have some splits and wear with one inside blue-cloth patch firming up the hinge. All original RAR E example seldom found complete with this box. . Please see the color photos posted to our website. . This album has the exact leather spine and gilt decorations as the one illustrated on p.94 in Hoerner see below. . BIBLIOGRAPHY: . It is in remarkable condition far and above the average same period example. . There are not marks damage or worm holes. Firmly bound many with the original tissue guards present some with foxing which does not affect the images preserved with albumen. . All in all an excellent collection of genuine early period photographic images. . RARELY found in such excellent and complete condition. . . unknown
