Quattro fascicoli sono “Disegni in margine a ballate di Goethe”, dell’artista tedesco Eugen Neureuther (1806-1882); pittore, incisore e illustratore, all’epoca della pubblicazione del primo di questi fascicoli era solo ventitreenne, ma è proprio su questa serie che cominciò a costruirsi una reputazione. Ciascuno dei quattro fascicoli su Goethe comprende un frontespizio e sette tavole contenenti un componimento dello scrittore incorniciato da disegni e vedute dell’artista. Il primo fascicolo è stampato in colore uniforme ma in alcuni casi diverso da foglio a foglio (seppia, sanguigna, verde e bluastro): oltre al frontespizio comprende, in apertura, un foglio di dedica a Goethe; il secondo (anch’esso del ’29) è impresso tutto in nero, così come il terzo (del ’29) e il quarto (del ’30). Le poesie sono scritte in varianti di caratteri gotici; tutto il pubblicato è completo, e ciascun fascicolo comprende la sua copertina originale, con cornice ornamentale ed entrambe le facciate esterne; al piatto superiore, in cornice, troviamo un componimento e all’inferiore un grande disegno ornamentale. Del ’31 è un altro fascicolo (“Baierische Gebirgslieder”, cioè ‘Canti di montagna’), con frontespizio e nove carte in cui è stampata anche la musica, e anche qui la copertina originale. Le tavole sono in totale 43, e tutto l’insieme è da considerarsi completo e in prima edizione. I canti di montagna furono in realtà il primo lavoro ambizioso di Neureuther, che mostrò i suoi disegni a Peter von Cornelius: quest’ultimo gli consigliò di dedicarsi a testi più impegnativi, da cui la scelta di Goethe, al quale l’artista mandò i suoi disegni nel ’28. Quest’ultimo incoraggiò fortemente Neureuther alla pubblicazione, intrattenendo con lui una corrispondenza che si sarebbe protratta durante tutta la vicenda editoriale e fino alla morte di Goethe, avvenuta nel ’32. The first folder is printed in uniform color but different from a plate to another, the other ones are printed in black. Each of them includes seven plates with a Goethe composition framed in drawings of the artist, and a title page: the first folder has a dedication page too. The fifth folder is from ’31: “Baierische Gebirgslieder”, i.e. ‘Mountain’s chants’, with a title page and nine plates, with also the music printed on. The total amount of plates is 43 and the work is complete and in its first edition, each folder has its own original cover.
