195624516
"I came to recognize that your service as Foreign Minister was not for the good of the country although I did not cease to value your talents and dedication."
DAVID BEN-GURION.Autograph Letter Signed to Moshe Sharett July 28 1956 Mount Carmel Israel. 3 pp. 4½ x 8¼ in.
Sharett served as Foreign Minister under Prime Minister Ben-Gurion from 1949 to 1954. He succeeded Ben-Gurion as Prime Minister from January 1954 to December 1955. When Ben-Gurion was reinstated as Prime Minister Sharett returned as Foreign Minister. Within months their relationship had deteriorated and Sharett resigned in protest on June 18 1956.

In 1952 Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew the Egyptian monarchy and introduced land reform. He became president in June 1956 calling for pan-Arab unity. Moshe Sharett believed that Nasser had delusions of grandeur and similarly that Ben-Gurion viewed himself as a messianic liberator. Ben-Gurion thought Sharett was being too cautious. Sharett believed Ben-Gurion was unwilling to negotiate. The cabinet voted 35 to 7 in favor of Sharett's resignation and he resigned on June 18 1956. Golda Meir succeeded Sharett as Foreign Minister and served until 1966. Three years later she became Israel's fourth Prime Minister. Over the next six weeks their correspondence resulted in this letter.

Complete Transcription

Mount Carmel 28 July 1956

To Moshe Sharett –peace and blessings

I hereby thank you for your detailed reply of 25 July to my letter to you of 8 July. I was pleased by your notification that your questions at the end of the letter were not intended to be given a reply. I do not believe that anyone will derive any benefit from arguments of this sort. However I feel obliged to illegible about two things.

A I absolutely reject the interpretation you gave on page 2 paragraph 10 of your letter to my remarks at the party Central Committee on 8 August 1955 as if "the Foreign Minister must serve as a kind of spokesman for the IDF." I did not and could not conceive of such an absurd idea. I said – and this is my considered opinion – that foreign policy needs to serve the needs of security in addition of course to trade agreements and things of that kind these too being within the bounds of its operation.

I don't have the stenogram at hand but I haven't any doubt that there is no foundation to the peculiar "interpretation" that you gave to my remarks. Also when comrades disagree with one another – it's better for the disagreements not to go beyond the bounds which those in disagreement set for themselves.

B I reject the premise upon which question 9 on page 12 of your letter is based. I fear that my clarification will sadden you and as God is my witness I don't have any intention or desire to cause you any sorrow. But I regard it as my comradely duty to apprise you of my opinion in this painful matter. Little by little I came to recognize that your service as Foreign Minister was not for the good of the country although I did not cease to value your talents and dedication as before and all that I said in praise of you at the Knesset in my announcement of your resignation was not said out of courtesy and politeness illegible but rather out of recognition and heartfelt belief.

The stupid idea that there is only one person in Israel capable of serving as prime minister never crossed my mind and in my broadcast to the nation on the day of my resignation I warmly quoted Verse 1 in Chapter 131 of the Book of Psalms. And I admit that I'm not of the opinion that there is only a single person in Israel who is allowed to conduct foreign policy. On the contrary it became clear to me without any hesitation and I know that I am capable of error in this matter like anyone who is flesh and blood that the good of the State requires a different management at the Foreign Ministry. I am certain that you will not concur with my opinion and by no means will I try to convince you. One thing I can assure you in good faith: I didn't do what I did out of a "relationship gone awry."

_________

It seems that your letter of 24 August 1955 to Eshkol Beba Kesse and Namir never reached me. I'll look into this matter upon my return to Jerusalem.

For my part I'm not at all opposed to you showing these your answers to anyone that you wish.

With blessings

D. Ben-Gurion

Historical Background

David Ben-Gurion 1886-1973 was born in the Kingdom of Poland then part of the Russian Empire as David Grün and he studied at the University of Warsaw. In 1906 he immigrated to Palestine which was part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1912 he moved to Constantinople to study law and adopted the Hebrew name Ben-Gurion. He supported the Ottoman Empire in World War I but was deported to Egypt and traveled to the United States where he remained for three years. After the Balfour Declaration of 1917 he joined the Jewish Legion of the British Army. He returned to Palestine after the war and became a leader of the Zionist movement. As head of the Jewish Agency from 1935 Ben-Gurion was effectively the leader of the Jewish population before there was a nation. He accepted the 1947 partition plan as a compromise that would establish a Jewish state and declared the independence of the state of Israel in May 1948. After leading Israel during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War Ben-Gurion won election as Prime Minister of Israel in 1948 as head of the Labour party in the Knesset. He resigned in December 1953 effective January 26 1954 then resumed office in November 1955 and served as Israeli Prime Minster until 1963. He then moved to Sde Boker a kibbutz in the Negev desert where he lived until his death.

Moshe Sharett 1894-1965 was born in Kherson in the Russian Empire modern Ukraine and emigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1906. In 1910 his family moved to Jaffa and later became one of the founding families of Tel Aviv. He studied law at Istanbul University but left to serve as an interpreter in the Ottoman Army in World War I. From 1922 to 1931 he lived in London and worked as a newspaper editor and journalist. He returned to Mandatory Palestine in 1931 and worked in the Jewish Agency of which he became head in 1933. He signed Israel's Declaration of Independence in 1948 and served as the Foreign Minister in the Provisional Government in 1948 and in the first cabinet formed in 1949. When Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion retired from politics in January 1954 Sharett succeeded him as Prime Minister. In the wake of the Lavon Affair Ben-Gurion came out of retirement to resume the office of Prime Minister in November 1955 and Sharett again served as Foreign Minister. He resigned as Foreign Minister in June 1956 in protest of the new government's policies.
books
16688Stockholm WI: Midnight Paper Sales nd. A gorgeous book with an original technique of printing the images: all of them are printed directly from slices of the actual trees discussed in the book in a variation on the traditional technique of nature printing where the object itself is used to print. Schanilec has made use of this idea in a number of his projects. The multi-color prints are produced by a reduction cutting process: "after each color is printed the block is cleaned with mineral spirits the surface is cut away further and the block is printed again in a different color. . . . on close inspection some of the features may not match up exactly since they represent a deeper plane in the wood." Sylvae page 18. All of the trees featured in the book grew on Schanilec's farm in Wisconsin. Some fell due to natural causes others had to be removed for logistical reasons some were cut down for their wood for flooring and other construction projects. The nature of the grain of each piece prompted the specific techniques used to print the image. Many of the multi-colored prints are at least two full pages quite a few are massive three-page spreads. The grain patterns of the wood express the beauty of the trees. Each section of the book deals with one tree including one or more prints and a detailed discussion of the function of the tree on the farm sometimes tidbits of local history how it came to be cut down its properties and details about the specific characteristics of each piece of wood and how these affected the print-making process. The book concludes with an over sized wood cut of a large tree cut down on Schanilec's farm--the wood engraving of the tree was carved from the wood of the tree. It's beautiful but there are mixed feelings about realizing that the tree is preserved for the future through the use of its own wood for the engraving. But then that is true for all of the images in the book! There is a great respect for nature and the conservation of trees throughout this book. It is a wonderful production! The binding of the book continues the wood theme: the spine of the book is white pigskin and the sides are cut from another tree on Schanilec's farm and have been finished like a beautiful piece of furniture. The book was printed by Schanilec and Verhoeven the Bixlers cast the type Craig Jensen and Gary McLerran bound the books and Dick Sorenson did the woodwork. Housed in a deep blue fabric covered slipcase. Number 6 of 120 copies. Signed by both Schanilec and Verhoeven. A laid in notice announced that the book won the 2007 Gregynog Prize at the Oxford Book Fair. Quarter to Midnight A.261.b and A.262 Matrix 27. Schanilec considers this book to be "a far better book" than the special edition of 26 copies of the same title with a different setting of the type. Fine. Midnight Paper Sales hardcover books

Overall very good.

"Dissertatio de Fragilitate Humana ex Lapsu Adami" or "Dissertation on the Fragility of Man from the Fall of Adam" is a work in which Menasseh disputed the Christian doctrine of original sin. The work was also published in Latin in the same year.

"As per many theological works by Amsterdam scholar and Hebrew printer Menasseh ben Israel Dissertatio de Fragilitate Humana was directed primarily to a Gentile audience. Dedicated to Gerbrandt Anslo a Christian Hebraist who was a pupil of Menasseh this study focuses upon the issue of predestination. In opposition to the Christian doctrine of Original Sin Menasseh was a staunch proponent of the traditional Jewish teaching that Man is born into the world pure and innocent." Kestenbaum and Company.

De Resurrectione Mortuorum Libri III or 'Three books on the resurrection of the dead' is in Latin which suggests it was for a Christian audience. A Spanish version also exists however which indicates that this text was also written for a Jewish audience which in 1636 was split by theological dissent. This and the Sefer Nishmat hayim can be seen as a response to the challenges of Uriel Acosta 1585-1640. Acosta was a sceptic philosopher who in 1624 had published 'An Examination of the Traditions of the Pharisees'. Acosta was suggesting that rabbis were descended from the Pharisees. The Pharisees were theologically opposed by the Sadducees. Menasseh notes that his work is written "contra Zaducaeos" "against the Sadducee" almost certainly a reference to Acosta. Acosta questioned the idea of the immortality of the soul regarding it as a concept invented by the rabbis without any biblical foundation." University of Leeds.

"Menasseh ben Israel 1604-1657 was among the most accomplished and cosmopolitan rabbis of his time and a pivotal intellectual figure in early modern Jewish history. He was one of the three rabbis of the "Portuguese Nation" in Amsterdam a community that quickly earned renown worldwide for its mercantile and scholarly vitality. Born in Lisbon Menasseh and his family were forcibly converted to Catholicism but suspected of insincerity in their new faith. To avoid the horrors of the Inquisition they fled first to southwestern France and then to Amsterdam where they finally settled. Menasseh played an important role during the formative decades of one of the most vital Jewish communities of early modern Europe and was influential through his extraordinary work as a printer and his efforts on behalf of the readmission of Jews to England." Menasseh ben Israel Rabbi of Amsterdam by Steven Nadler.

"Menasseh ben Israel bridged the Jewish and the Christian worlds. He was a rabbi a scholar and a publisher who authored and printed works in Latin Portuguese Spanish and Hebrew. He also collaborated with Rembrandt who etched his portrait. Menasseh ben Israel is particularly interesting to Hebrew scholars and librarians. He revolutionised Hebrew printing and made Amsterdam the capital of Hebrew publishing. He helped create a new standard of Hebrew typography that became widely known imitated and pirated as "Defus Amsterdam" Amsterdam print and "Otiyot Amsterdam" Amsterdam Letters." It reflects my memoirs of the Passover in my father's house. It reflects my early impressions and feelings; the images that were always invoked in my fancy by the majestic and meaningful ritual."

"The most elaborate of Shahn's deluxe books were his Ecclesiastes published in two editions in 1965 and 1966 and his Haggadah published in 1966. The later included twelve Haggadah illustrations he had executed in 1931 which had never been published plus ten new drawings and a full color title page and frontispiece. Shahn dedicated his 1966 Haggadah- the service of narrative and prayer that accompanies the ritual meal inaugurating he Jewish Passover feast-to his father Joshus Hessel Shahn." Lithuanian-born graphic artist Ben Shahn developed many of the illustrations for his Haggadah in 1930 while working on his pictorial work on the Dreyfus case and conceiving his celebrated series of paintings of the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. As in his other works Shahn's Haggadah illustrations highlight the struggle against oppression and injustice while maintaining a compassionate tone. In 1965 Shahn reproduced these Passover drawings which had already been acquired by the Jewish Museum incorporating them into this magnificent Haggadah. Paris unknown
