18990009160LONDON ENGLAND to KUCHING SARAWAK BORNEO. Good. 1899. On offer is a fascinating diary of an English gentleman by the name of Ben D. Beeley from England who at the very end of the 19th Century travels from London to Borneo to function as a missionary to the local population there. The 1899 New Year begins with a short entry by Beeley: I commenced the New Year in all Saints Church. O Lord help me to serve Thee with true devotion in my life as a missionary in Borneo. In February He sails aboard steamship from London heading to Singapore. The day before he says his goodbyes: The saddest day in my life he remarks. I left home this morning at 9 a.m. How awful to say good-bye to the dear ones at home Dear Father and Darling mother and dear old Gal. M God help them and bless and comfort them.I took my dear little Lottie for a long walk. How happy I was in her company. How sad to leave her but I am happy since I know she loves me truly and faithfully. I have asked her not to wait for me and she promises she will not. Never can I forget the farewell at All Saints Church. All the girls cried. Jeff embraced me. And those dear men how they did cheer!! My god take away pride from me. He leaves on the steamer Kawachi Maru. The beginning of his journey is less than pleasant filled with headaches terrible sea sickness and rough seas. The days get better as they go on and Beeley notes his activities everyday on the boat. For example: Awoke feeling much better. Had a better breakfast. Spent the morning on Deck. Talk to one of the Miss Vincents. Bible Reading on Luke xvii 1 -10 . Very rough in evening and much spray. He writes everyday of the journey to Singapore. From England the steamer travels across the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal. Beeley doesnt like Port Said much: I was 4 or 5 times in the day grossly insulted in the street. The whole tone of the place is awful. There is work there for 100 missionaries and there is only one! The ship reaches Singapore and is therefore only a day before it goes on to Borneo. Beeley is stationed in Kuching Sarawak as a missionary. His first impressions in early April are very positive and shortly after arriving he get to work: I took Perrys boys for scripture from 10 to 10:45. It was a great treat to hear how well they answered. They were all Dyaks and Chinese. My first bit of mission work. He comes off as an intensely curious person and writes often about the customs and religion of the people around him: Chinese ancestor worship is very extraordinary.a procession headed by 2 men carrying 2.coloured baskets next to a scarlet banner followed by a dead goat on a stretcher and a young dead pig both these have fruit in their mouths.; The Malays have curious customs of piling up pillows one on the top of the others; The Chinese and Malay made an awful row. They believe a dragon was swelling the moon. and they tried to scare him. He also starts to notice some of the ethnic strife: This morning 5 Dyaks were executed for the murder of some Chinese. The murder took place about five years ago but the murders have only just been found out. We had some Cricket at the fort. It was good fun. The Dyaks thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a boy in an inch of water on the pitch. I never expected to play cricket in the east in such a quagmire. While in Kuching Beeley spends considerable time with one of the White Rajahs of Sarawak Charles of Sarawak Charles Johnson/Brooke. The Rajahs were a dynastic monarchy of the English Brooke family who founded and ruled the Kingdom of Sarawak from 1841 - 1947. He receives an invitation for dinner from the Rajah at Astana his palace in Kuching. When Beeley sets off to the field to preach he encounters many obstacles including awful weather tribes of headhunters and dangerous animals. At one village he notices human heads hanging from posts outside of their homes. Saribas people are very nice & all want me to stay with them. There were 2 human heads hanging up the house opposite our beds.He has near disastrous river trip & almost drowns on several occasions. He also hunts & in one case shoots a 7 foot crocodile outside of his hut. His journey to the more rural and isolated parts of the country is exceptionally fascinating to read. Despite becoming a Deacon in September Beeley is assigned to a seemingly abandoned missionary station where everything is rundown and has to live in the ruins of a house. He suffers bouts of dysentery and mentions many of his fellow missionaries are depressed and want to leave Sarawak. He writes 'This Diocese is in a bad state. Men are all dissatisfied. Gomes Perry in fact nearly all want to leave. What will be the end I do not know! Shortly afterward he becomes horribly ill and spends almost two months in a delirious state. He writes often of struggles with his faith I hope I shall not be alone in any mission station I am so weak & I am afraid of myself.; O God help me in the great responsibility of guiding this mission station. Give me strength and help. I do feel the responsibility of this mission I hope all will go well. and his own personal salvation. As well as his struggles to actually comprehend the Dyak language and culture and to speak back to them. At the end of the year Beeley writes a fantastic retrospective passage: The end of 1899. A wonderful year to me. The beginning of a new life how many things have happened !! Some for good some almost bringing about my downfall. God thou knowest- all my love thee feeble and weak though it be. Am I better or worse for the past year The past is gone from us forever. It is gathered and it belongs to us no more. No single work can ever be unspoken no single step retraced. In February I had heart rendering farewells to leave home & my dear family & her whom I love. In April i landed in Sarawak & commenced my work. In July I had fierce trials by temptation. In August I was prostrate on a bed with sickness. In September I was ordained Deacon. In December left alone in the heart of Sarawak. Yet O God I was in thy hands & I know thou will keep me safe. The book is in good condition. The cover and spine have some aesthetic wear and discoloration but are still structurally good. The binding is still tight. The pages inside show little foxing or rips and tears. The handwriting is clear and legible throughout in black and blue ink and occasionally pencil. Some of the ink has faded a bit and there are a couple dozen pages where the ink has bled through to the other side. This does slightly affect the ease at which the content can be read for these pages but the bleeding through is minimal and the words can still be made out with slightly more effort. 533315Unbound. Fine. Five concept drawings. Gouache and airbrush with some cut-out elements. Each drawing is approximately 16.5" x 22" mounted on slightly larger card boards. Unsigned but accomplished by important industrial designer Ben Fortunato Marcune who later shifted his focus to sculpture and art. Each painting is on paper tipped-on to artist's board with a plastic overlay sheet. Three of the drawings are for vending machines the other two are designs for a trade show booth incorporating the machines. The condition of each is fine. As ludicrous as it seems French fry vending machines actually enjoyed a brief vogue in the 1980s and 1990s first appearing in 1982 in Australia and still exist today albeit in scattered locations. The machine used boiling cooking oil and had a built-in fire extinguisher. More recent versions use hot air to heat the fries. These drawings date appear to be from the early to mid-1980s and are striking whimsical and pleasing and shed light on various innovations in marketing and processing foods. unknown

A good copy with generally crisp clean text notably complete with the final two folding almanac charts.<br /> <br /> Second edition of this compendium of Jewish law composed in honor of Don Samuel Abravanel of Seville. It was intended principally for the use of persons in the upper social classes many of whom occupied positions in government and found it inconvenient to observe all the legal and ritual regulations or lacked the time to refer to the halakhic sources. First published at Ferrara in 1554 and arranged in five articles Heb. = ma'amarot "the work has an added importance on account of the introduction which contains valuable historical material including important details of the method of study in the yeshivot of France and Germany as well as contemporary incidents in the history of the Jews in Spain. Menahem writes reprovingly of those Jews who because of the demands of the times began to disregard the observance of the precepts. Although he shows great erudition in his knowledge of the Talmud and codes and was acquainted with the teachings of the earlier Spanish French and German scholars he relies mainly for his halakhic rulings on those of Asher b. Jehiel" EJ. This preference likely reflects the influence of Asher's son Judah who was one of Menahem's principal teachers at the yeshiva in Toledo.<br /> <br /> Among the very last Hebrew works published at Sabbioneta the title highlights the approval of Vespasiono Gonzaga the reigning prince. Previously in 1553 "the proprietors of this press attempted the hazardous work of republishing the Talmud and one Treatise saw the light; but the papal decree of that year made the further publication of the Talmud in Italy an impossibility. The end of this press came in the year 1559 due as De Rossi intimates to anti-Christian statements in some of their publications which finally brought down upon them the wrath of the church" Amram. When Vincenzo Conti briefly re-established the press at Sabbioneta to print the present work and two or three others he would have been keen to indicate his obedience to the temporal and ecclesiastical authorities.<br /> <br /> The verso of the last numbered leaf and the following unnumbered leaf both are broadsheets comprise a calendar or almanac entitled "Beʼur ha-luḥot" for the years 5025-6000. The first part is designated "Ha-Luaḥ ha-Rishon" and the second "Ha-Luaḥ ha-Sheni." Many copies appear to lack one or both of the broadsheets.<br /> <br /> Annotations: Old Hebrew entries in two hands at the margins of the title-page; some scattered marginal notes in Hebrew. One in particular - a drawing I made of your father many many years ago. I found it! It was in a sketchbook dated 1915-1916. I've had it matted. It gives me great pleasure to send it along. The signature was just put on. I didn't sign my drawings in those days. The little aphorism must have been given to me by your father. I will tell you how fondly I treasure your father's memory. He was such a gentle soul. For a kid to have to go to work at 14 is not very pleasant. To have come under the gentle influence and tutelage of your father was the only compensation. unknown

The commentary by Rav Leone Modena found in this Hagadah the famous “Tzeli Esh†is an abbreviation of Don Isaac Abrabanel’s voluminous commentary “Zevach Pesach†first published during the author’s lifetime in Constantinople in 1505. The translation of the “Tzeli Esh†into Yiddish is by Solomon Zalman ben Moses Raphael London 1661-1748 author and translator who was active between 1709 and 1735. Leon de Modena or Yehuda Aryeh Mi-Modena 1571-1648 is considered the most famous Venetian Rabbi of the 17th century. He was a Jewish scholar born in Venice into a family of migrants from France after the French expulsion of Jews. He was well respected but his reputation within traditional Judaism suffered both due to his criticism of emerging sects within Judaism but also because of his addiction to gambling and seeming lack of stability. He is famous for his criticism of the mystical approach to Judaism and his attacks on the Kaballa but his international fame mainly rests upon him being the interpreter of Judaism to the Christian world. He was the first since Josephus and Philo to write a Jewish text to non-Jewish readers Historia de gli riti Hebraici 1637 which was widely read by Christians and extremely influential. The editor Naftali Hertz ben Alexander Ziskind Levi Rofe of Emden “set up his press in Amsterdam in 1726. He complemented his printing equipment with that purchased from the Isaac Templo press after it was closed down. He was a physician by profession as evidenced by his moniker Rofe. He was granted title of doctor of medicine from the University of Harderwijk in 1716. He pursued his medical practice as well as printing and bookselling. He was a member of a small group of Jewish intellectuals interested in scientific disputes. He tended to publish alone as well as in cooperation with others but above all with his son-in-law Kosman ben Joseph Baruch who was also involved in the book trade. Their cooperation lasted from 1742 to 1766 and resulted in many works being published.†The Bezalel Narkiss Index of Jewish Art The Center for Jewish Art </em> hardcover

Percy Simpson has called the 1640 folio editions "a record of muddle evasion and dishonesty." cited in Williams "Chetwin Crooke and the Jonson Folios". The poet and playwright Ben Jonson 1572-1637 achieved a high level of literary success rivalled only by his contemporary William Shakespeare. Although of humble origins Jonson carved out a space for himself as one of England's foremost authors of the Jacobean period renowned for his elaborate court masques and poignant comedic plays. His mother a clergyman's widow remarried a bricklayer. Jonson received a schoolboys education at Westminster School where he studied under the antiquarian William Camden. As a young man Jonson worked for his step-father as a bricklayer. Unsuited to the task of bricklaying it had been reported that Jonson would recite lines of Homer while serving as his step-father's hod-carrier.<br /> <br /> In the 1690s Jonson joined English expeditionary forces to the Low Countries. Upon his return he worked with limited success as an actor. In the autumn of 1698 the premier of his Every Man in his Humor at the Curtain Theatre acted by Shakespeare's Company and with Shakespeare himself playing a leading role solidified Jonson's reputation as an accomplished playwright. The play introduced a new kind of vernacular comedy. His other early successes included Every Man Out of his Humor Cynthia's Revels and Poetaster.<br /> <br /> King James's ascension in 1603 marked a new upward phase in Jonson's career. At the Stuart court Jonson staged elaborate masques a genre of courtly entertainment with singing dancing acting music outlandish costumes scenery and automatons. Jonson's 1605 Masque of Blackness gained him royal favor. In this extravagant masque included in the present copy Queen Anne and eleven of her ladies emerged from a scallop shell painted as "Blackamores" and "strangely attired." In collaboration with Inigo Jones Jonson's masques of the Stuart court "achieved its most sophisticated form" ODNB.<br /> <br /> In addition to his literary achievements Jonson's interest in the publication of his work cultivated a sense of "authorial ownership and identity that is recognizably modern." Therefore he is a major figure in the history of intellectual property rights. Despite the fact that the theatre companies owned his plays Jonson collaborated with publishers to have his collected works printed in 1616. The present 1640 printing of Volume I is a reprint of the 1616 edition. In the years leading up to the 1640-41 printing of Volumes I II and III a series of legal disputes occurred between Jonson the printers the booksellers and the publishers. <br /> <br /> The enduring legacy of Jonson in the English canon cannot be understated. As Ian Donaldson writes "In theatre.Jonson perfected a kind of comedy more technically perfect in design more contemporary in subject matter than that of his greatest rival i.e. Shakespeare." His work influenced writers such as Abraham Cowley John Milton Lord Rochester and John Dryden. He remains a central figure of English poetry drama and verse. French Orientalist painter Étienne Dinet 1861-1929 met his Arabic teacher and closest friend Sliman ben Ibrahim 1870-1953 in Algeria in 1889 when Sliman saved the painter from an ambush. Sliman accompanied Dinet to Paris in 1896 where the latter met the French Society of Oriental Painters and impressed them with both his character and his couscous. Sliman and Dinet collaborated on several other works including a biography of Mohammed and an account of the Hajj they made to Mecca after Dinet's conversion to Islam. The gorgeous binding by Henri Blanchetière 1881-1933 utilizes rich jewel tones scalloped edges and complex gilt scrolling patterns calling to mind Islamic art and architecture and echoing Dinet's beautiful designs used inside the book. After training with Marcellin Lortic and René Kieffer Blanchetière took over the atelier of binder Joseph Brétault in 1906 at which time "he aligned himself with Marius-Michel in the pursuit of a modern binding style inspired by nature. His designs incorporated a cautious blend of Art Nouveau flowers" and "after World War I he gradually cut his remaining ties to traditionalism." Duncan & De Bartha As a craftsman of artistic fine bindings Blanchetière ranks with Kieffer and Charles Meunier but his bindings are less commonly seen in the marketplace. H. Piazza unknown

159933044-51Basel Konrad Waldkirch 1599. Printer's device and historiated initials at top of title-page. Double columns. 166 ff. Sm. folio. Old boards spine and all edges leather- rebacked. In a cloth case. Basel Konrad Waldkirch 1599. First Basel edition of this dictionary entitled "Arukh" of the entire post-biblical literature and a special dictionary to the Talmud and Midrash. Rabbi Nathan ben Jechiel b. Abraham c. 1020-1106 was a Jewish Italian and both a lexicographer and one of the most important Talmudic authorities of the 11th century. He quotes on individual headwords texts from many of today lost writings and leads rabbinic expressions on their supposed original in Greek Latin Persian etc. It attained great popularity especially at the work on Tamudic lexica up to the present. This work was first issued at Venice in 1533 but in fact it is not a word-for-word reprint.- Due to paper quality slightly browned throughout some small wormtracks in inner margin of last few leaves otherwise a good copy. - VD 16 N 160; Fürst III p. 21; Prijs 158; Wininger JNB vol. 4 p. 500.
