The scarce second edition of Rabbi Aaron ben Mordecai of Rödelheim's born ca.1695 Yiddish translation of the two known Targumim of the biblical book of Esther. The first of the Aramaic Targumim Aramaic Translations or paraphrases of the books of the bible is more common and well known while the second targum is noted for its embellishments on the Biblical account with considerable additional apocryphal material not always evidently related to the Esther story. The Yiddish text here is printed throughout in the traditional Vaybertaytsh script. This is the Rabbi Aharon's most notable work and the first addition was originally published in 1718 in Frankfurt.<br /> <br /> Binding with light rubbing to extremities. Back board lightly bumped along the side edge. Interior with some chipping/fraying to the edges of the first two leaves resulting in some minimal loss of text. Pages throughout with some sporadic soling or dampstaining. Some chipping and fraying to the final leaf as well. Binding in very good interior in good condition overall. Quite scarce. The Library's most important Hebrew illuminated manuscript is known as the "Washington Haggadah" because of its location in Washington D.C. A Haggadah the plural is haggadot is a liturgical work that is recited in the home at the festive evening meal of Passover in order to fulfill the biblical injunction Exodus 13:8 to recount the story of the Exodus to each generation. Haggadot are often illustrated the theory being that this will keep the children interested and awake during the reciting of the text. <br /> <br /> Completed on January 29 1478 the Washington Haggadah was signed by Joel ben Simeon a well-known scribe and artist responsible for more than a dozen other Hebrew illuminated manuscripts found in collections around the world. In addition to the full text of the Passover night liturgy the Washington Haggadah features stunningly intricate illuminated panels and a series of Passover illustrations that include depictions of "The Four Sons" "The Search for Leaven" and "The Messiah Heralded." The enduring popularity of Joel ben Simeon's miniatures is reflected in the many reproductions of his work that have appeared over the years in anthologies of Jewish art and manuscript painting. <br /> <br /> In 1991 the Library of Congress published this facsimile edition of the Washington Haggadah accompanied by a companion volume with a detailed scholarly description analysis and assessment of the manuscript. This edition faithfully preserves the original text with the Hebrew facsimile appearing in the original right-to-left orientation. First edition of this strange work of mystical theology and “astral light.†The author who Brunet calls a madman rambles almost incoherently about the fall of man and the resulting supernatural forces that operate in and around humanity. He claims that Adam’s sin caused faith to be at odds with reason and the “abuse†of reason further distances humans from God. His focus is on the different degrees of light in the universe—natural magical astral supernatural celestial and divine—and how to harness them for good. He encourages the pious to reject materiality and “gross bodies†and seek truth in the magnetism and light abounding within the spirit realm. Amidst this intangible theosophizing he interjects some radical dogmatic opinions including the non-existence of hell and the immaculate conception of Mary. <br /> <br /> Dutoit-Membrini 1721-1793 was a Swiss pastor and founder of the mystical quietist cult of Inner Souls in Lausanne. His life was marked by periods of debilitating sickness after each of which he emerged progressively more committed to Catholic mysticism. Screw bound black cloth flexible boards with mounted labels “Photographsâ€. Contains 392 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 1†x ½†and 9½†x 7†with some captions and one large 48†x 6†panorama photograph. Edgewear with some pages detached but present very good with near fine photographs with some fading. <br /> <br /> A photo album kept by Ben Hollander from his time at college in 1913 and continuing to his life after school through 1946. Hollander attended Berea College in Berea Kentucky. During the summer months and later in his life he visits several other states including Pennsylvania North Dakota Washington D.C. Utah and other cities in Kentucky. The album begins with Hollander’s invitations and name plates for the Alpha Zeta Literary Society at Berea. A full group photograph shows the young men in the fraternity with their names captioned below. Other posed group shots include the sorority chapter of the Literary Society. The album features a wide variety of photos from group vacations with friends to peculiar shots around the school one of which is on the front pastedown with a photograph of two young men carrying a large branch of mistletoe in 1913. There are several pictures of farms with horses which Hollander seemed to fancy as the pictures are well composed. He also takes pictures of horse carriages and some of his fellow classmates riding horses. Many of the pictures showing Hollander hiking around parks and lakes in Pennsylvania. During these trips someone else is taking pictures of Hollander reading which he does in several photographs. The person is unknown but possibly a girlfriend of admirer. These photographs of Hollander include captions like “Cute Little Thing†and “He’s so funny†whether they were captioned by the person taking the photo or sarcastically captioned by Hollander himself it is unknown. Of the ephemera there are some small cutouts from magazines mostly of quotes and poems “my creed I would be pure for there are those trust me; I would be brave for there is much to dare; I would be friend of all the friendless.†Also included are tickets and scholastic ribbons one for the University of North Dakota’s band concert inscribed to Hollander and a ribbon for special access to the event. <br /> <br /> A later photograph from 1916 shows Hollander in a photograph for naval hospital Staff in Washington D.C. Hollander has a couple pictures of his fellow soldiers and the hospital staff as well as a camp leader for a boy’s camp. In 1931 Hollander is a camp leader for a Boy Scout Troop and the YMCA while still enlisted in the military. At this time he is seen much older with his own personal horse and a family. Some of the photographs show a woman and children though their last names are not captioned. Many of the photographs are candids and sometimes hand cut into shapes framing the subject from the background of the photograph. <br /> <br /> An interesting man’s photo album during his life at college in 1913 through to his military service and family life up until 1946. unknown

188147212N. P.: Privately photographed n. d. ca 1881. 1881. First edition. 5 1/4" x 8 1/2" 11 1/8" x 14 3/4" framed photograph of an Apache Maiden by Western photographer George Ben Wittick. He traveled with Matilde Coxe Stevenson the first woman to work in the Southwest as an ethnologist on her ethnographic survey of Arizona in 1881. In 1885 she became President of the Women's Anthropological Society of America. George Benjamin Wittick was a photographer born in Pennsylvania later moving to Illinois and then out west in 1878 to pursue frontier photography. He first worked for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroads but later established his first photography studio in Gallup New Mexico. During his career he photographed many subjects to include the railroad; southwestern landscapes such as Canyon de Chelly the Navajo Reservation and Pueblo scenes; and the Native peoples mostly the Apache Navajo Hopi and Zuni. He also painted scenes of the American expansion westward as well. He carried with him a collection of props for his photographs to include rifles pistols blankets pottery and more. Most of his photographs were taken outside using the natural sunlight against backdrops. His best known photographs were of Geronimo and Billy the Kid. In 1900 he established his last studio at Fort Wingate. He later died in 1903 of a rattlesnake bite at Fort Wingate which was foretold by a Hopi priest. Photograph is well-mounted and an attractive rendering of a young Apache girl who is well dressed in her outfit as she displays some Apache baskets and a handsome water jar. Very good condition. 19300001287DETROIT FLORIDA CALIFORNIA. Good. 1930. On offer is the fascinating original manuscript diary of Miss Anne Bernstein b. May 28 1914 of Michigan the diary starts out with her first living in Dryden and then a year later the family moves to Detroit. This is a very unique diary inasmuch it is a travel diary of the many many trips Anne made from her teens as a high spirited young woman on road trips or hitchhiking on numerous short and long distance trips in 1930 to vacation trips holiday excursions hospital stays weekned visits etc. a mature and sometimes married woman would take over the next 25 years until 1955. Through Anne's travel lists and narrative we are in truth documenting her adult life. The first page lists 12 different trips in the summer through to Thanksgiving. In 1931 the entries become somewhat more detailed and the 'Ran away from home' makes for an ominous entry in green ink. But with all her rebelliousness and running around partying and boys Anne is at heart a very nice Jewish girl who gets married to Benjamin Bradley at the Heights Temple in Cleveland by Rabbi Rosenthal. Over 88 pages of entries we see a life and get an intimate look at what Anne was like and her experiences including her single years hitchhiking all over the place her marriage to Ben Bradley the birth of her children including twins the family's move to Florida living in California with her husband because he's in the Navy her horse racing and everything in between. Plus she seems to love to drink and smoke and on numerous occasions "swears off of both" but that promise to herself doesn't last too long. Here are some snippets of this super diary: "July 5th 1930 Hitch hiked to Almont Imlay Romeo Clifford North Branch and Kingstom. 160 miles." "September 5th 1931 Labor day. To parade at Romeo with mother father Sammy Lily Niki and I. Then to Detroit and new home at 16161 Roselawn." "July 30th 1932 To Lakeville to swim with mailman.
