The display carton has the words: 5¢ COWBOY STORIES The "Swap - It" Books Assorted Titles." The display carton has minor scuffing and light edgewear still an extraordinary survivor set. First editions thus of 121 volumes in this original counter display for the "Swap-It" Cowboy Storybook series issued by Samuel Lowe in the Big Little Book format. Lowe 1890-1952 was longtime president of Whitman Publishing Co. in Racine Wisconsin and responsible for much of the concepts and marketing driving the popularity of the Big Little Books as well as developing the successful relationship with Walt Disney Studios for movie tie-ins. After leaving Whitman in 1940 he set up the Samuel Lowe Co. developed a similar line and was one of the first packagers in the publishing and comic industries coordinating artists editors designs and printing to successfully produce books under the Samuel Lowe Co. label. These 5¢ smaller versions were designed to offer children a far more reasonable miniature book than the standard Big Little Book or Better Little Book issued by Whitman and Saalfield at the time typically priced 10¢ to 15¢ each following World War II. Crowe 1920-1996 was cartoonist in Racine Wisconsin who following World War II was a successful commercial artist illustrated many of the Hopalong Cassidy books and ran an advertising agency until 1996. In about 1646 Hagiz went to Italy for the purpose of publishing his books and remained there until after 1656 supporting himself by teaching. About 1657 he left Livorno for Jerusalem where the Vega brothers of Livorno had founded a Beit Midrash for him and where he became a member of the rabbinical college. He had a large number of eager young students as his followers among whom were Moses ibn Habib who became his son-in-law and Joseph Almosnino later the Rabbi of Belgrade. Hagiz was active in the opposition to Sabbatai Zevi and banned his teachings.<br /><br />Moshe ben Yonatan Galante 1621-1689 grandson of the 16th-century rabbi Moshe Galante was a 17th-century head rabbi of Jerusalem and Hagiz's father-in-law. Galante served as the first Rishon Le'Zion and was called Magen meaning 'defender' or 'shield' with reference to the initials of his name. Rabbi Hezekiah da Silva of Livorno was among his disciples. Just as Hagiz Galante was among the fierce opponents to Sabbatai Zevi and his teachings. Following Hagiz's death Galante took his place as the head of Beit Ya'akov Yeshivah in Jerusalem which was the biggest and most prominent Jewish education establishment of Jerusalem at the time.<br /> Venice, 1704. hardcover

The second volume on botany includes many Latin names. Joseph Schönhak was born at Tiktin 1812; died at Suwalki 1870. He led a retired life devoting his time to writing and study. He was the author of "Ha-Mashbir" or "Aruk he-Hadash" Warsaw 1858. His "Toldath Haaretz" Toledot ha-Arez is a natural history in three volumes. The subjects are arranged and classified and a full description of each is given as to color form and habitat. Those that are mentioned in the Bible are given book chapter and verse; and so with those mentioned in the Talmud. The "Ha-Masbir" is an Aramaic-German rabbinical dictionary based on Nathan ben Jehiel's "Aruk" "Hamiluim oder Masbir Hachadasch. Aramäisch-rabinisch-deutsches Wörterbuch Ergenzung zu dem Hamasbir oder Aruch" Warsaw 1869. His "Sefer ha-Milluim" was published in Warsaw in 1869 "Sefer Ha-Miluim Le-Aruch: A dictionary to the Talmud and Midrashim based on the order of the Aruch with clarification of readings and sources from the Babylonian and Palestian Talmuds the Tannaitic Midrahsim ." was reprinted 1978 Jerusalem Makor. A collection of dramatist Ben Jonson's 1572-1637 most popular works; including his comic masterpiece The Alchemist 1610 - one of the only Renaissance plays besides the works of Shakespeare to have achieved longevity and remain popular with audiences throughout the intervening centuries. The three plays are subjoined by 'A true and exact catalogue of all the plays and other dramatick pieces that were ever yet printed in the English tongue in alphabetical order: continu’d down to April 1732' also issued separately. The list compiled by bookseller William Feales ‘Where may be had Variety of Plays’ though rather comprehensive is of limited bibliographical scope as it provides only the titles with no regard for authorship or publication details.
