One of 250 numbered copies this No. 174. A handsome edition of Jonson's lyrics printed to commemorate the poet's tercentenary. Nearly all of the poems were printed from the first folio of 1616 collated with two copies held in the Bodleian Library. The type is Caslon's Old Face printed on Batchelor's hand-made paper. Typed letter signed May 19 1942 documents leadership communication immediately following the Biltmore Conference a decisive moment in the political consolidation of Zionist objectives toward the establishment of a Jewish state in Palestine. Written while serving as head of the Jewish Agency Ben-Gurion's correspondence falls four days after the conclusion of the conference held in New York from May 6 to May 11 1942 where he played a central role in advancing the Biltmore Program. That program called for the fulfillment of the Balfour Declaration and explicitly urged the creation of Palestine as a Jewish commonwealth with unrestricted Jewish immigration. The letter situates Ben-Gurion within the immediate aftermath of a strategic shift in Zionist policy as leadership increasingly sought American political and financial support while moving away from reliance on British cooperation during World War II.<br /> <br /> Ben-Gurion David. May 19 1942. 1 page. 5 x 8 inches. Typed letter signed on Winthrop letterhead. The letter reads in part "Thank you so much for your message of sympathy. With kind regards" signed "D. Ben-Gurion." Dark burgundy morocco boards each with an elaborate border in blind the front board with the title and author in gilt the spine has raised bands creating five compartments each repeating a fleur-de-lis in blind save for the second and fourth from the top which have the title and the author's last name respectively gilt striping along the edges of the boards decorative gilt turn-ins all page edges gilt and marbled endpapers. Boards and spine show some wear sunning to the spine foxing to the preliminaries terminals and frontispiece with some light offsetting to the title page overall very good with the binding sound and the gilt remaining bright. Number 80 of 300 printed copies. Included in the list of proprietors is U.S. President Chester A. Arthur U.S. Vice President David Davis as well as members of Arthur's Cabinet and several U.S. senators.
