A fairly good copy.<br /> <br /> First part only of the first Latin edition of this classic work on Jewish apologetics written by the celebrated rabbi religious thinker and printer-publisher Menasseh ben Israel 1604-1657. The work was first published in Spanish at Amsterdam in four parts between 1632 and 1651. By providing a harmonization of all the apparent contradictions within the Hebrew Scriptures he hoped to encourage converso Jews of Iberian descent who had lost touch with their religious heritage to make the return to rabbinic Judaism. The present volume deals with the Pentateuch Five Books of Moses; the second volume treats the Prophetic books and the Hagiographa Writings. The work was first published a year earlier in a Spanish language edition.<br /> <br /> The work attempts resolution to no less than 180 seeming discrepancies in the Pentateuch. The breadth of Menasseh's encyclopedic knowledge is vast the Conciliador contains citations from 221 Jewish and 54 non-Jewish authorities. The Amsterdam printer and publisher Hendrick Laurensz Lauretius provided the financing for this edition along with two other Bible editions and two editions of the Hebrew Psalms printed by Menasseh between 1631 and 1646. "These publications were not only made for the local market but mainly for international trade. Thanks to this financial help Menasseh was able to organize his printing office in a more professional way" Fuks hiring a Jewish compositor Judah Leb ben Mordecai Gimple from Posen and a gentile compositor Bartholomeus Laurensz. <br /> <br /> The printing activity of Menasseh was especially important in the steadily growing productions of the Hebrew press in the Northern Netherlands. Fulfilling the needs of the Sephardic community for Jewish ritual texts eliminated the need for expensive imports from Venice and Poland. Menasseh undersood that the relatively cheap paper and tools available in Amsterdam made it possible to compete in quality and prices with the Hebrew presses of Poland Italy and Basel. "Gentile publishers and booksellers in Amsterdam such as Jansonius and Laurentius were quick to see the opportunity of the opening Eastern European market and financed several of Menasseh's publications" Fuks. A very good copy amply-margined with fine crisp text throughout.<br /> <br /> Important edition of this Aramaic version of the biblical books of Chronicles attributed to Joseph ben Hiyya d. 333 a Babylonian amora and head of the Pumbedita academy near present-day Falluja Iraq. "Ben Hiyya was also distinguished in biblical exegesis and left an Aramaic translation of parts of the Bible which is often quoted. It is not to be assumed however that Joseph translated the whole Bible though the Aramaic translation of the Books of Chronicles is ascribed to him. Enc. Jud. The editio princeps edited from an Erfurt manuscript by Matthias Frederick Beck and accompanied by substantial annotations was published at Augsburg in 1680. "After this David Wilkins gave the public an edition from a Cambridge manuscript of which the text was more pure and more complete. The critic should unite both these editions the former for the value of its learned notes and the latter for its full and accurate text†The Biblical Repertory. <br /> <br /> The Coptic scholar David Wilkens 1685–1745 was born of Prussian parentage in Memel Lithuania. Little is known about his education in Germany probably in Berlin or how he acquired his knowledge of ancient and Semitic languages which was extensive rather than profound. He referred to the antiquarian Ezechiel Spanheim the elector of Brandenburg's ambassador in England from 1701 to 1710 as his former teacher. By 1707 Wilkins was studying at the Bodleian Library in Oxford and had encountered a group of clerical protectors in London. In 1709 engaged in preparing a history of the patriarchs of Alexandria which remained in manuscript and the editio princeps of the Coptic Bohairic New Testament the Novum Testamentum Aegyptium 1716 he left for the continent. He called on scholars examined manuscripts in Vienna Rome and Paris and stopped in Amsterdam in 1714 to see to the publication of his first works -- an edition of the Aramaic paraphrasis of the books of Chronicles and an Armenian version of the apocryphal third epistle to the Corinthians 1715 -- and of John Chamberlayne's polyglot edition of the Lord's prayer to which he contributed. Wilkins was an industrious scholar. In the three years he spent as librarian at Lambeth he made important contributions to the cataloguing of manuscripts. In 1721 he edited the Anglo-Saxon laws in 1725–6 the complete works of John Selden and in 1731 the Coptic Pentateuch. His main work was his Concilia Magnae Britanniae et Hiberniae an account of British church councils from 446 to 1717. French Orientalist painter Étienne Dinet 1861-1929 met his Arabic teacher and closest friend Sliman ben Ibrahim 1870-1953 in Algeria in 1889 when Sliman saved the painter from an ambush. Sliman accompanied Dinet to Paris in 1896 where the latter met the French Society of Oriental Painters and impressed them with both his character and his couscous. Sliman and Dinet collaborated on several other works including a biography of Mohammed and an account of the Hajj they made to Mecca after Dinet's conversion to Islam. The gorgeous binding by Henri Blanchetière 1881-1933 utilizes rich jewel tones scalloped edges and complex gilt scrolling patterns calling to mind Islamic art and architecture and echoing Dinet's beautiful designs used inside the book. After training with Marcellin Lortic and René Kieffer Blanchetière took over the atelier of binder Joseph Brétault in 1906 at which time "he aligned himself with Marius-Michel in the pursuit of a modern binding style inspired by nature. His designs incorporated a cautious blend of Art Nouveau flowers" and "after World War I he gradually cut his remaining ties to traditionalism." As in the case of other publishers and booksellers such bindings often were done for rather than by the party whose name is stamp-signed on the volume. Bindings signed by Schulze are consistently attractive but are not common: since 1975 ABPC has listed six such morocco bindings two of them described as "elaborate" or "extra." Since our volume says that the binding is by--and not for--Schulze we can only assume that our publisher had an in-house binder. From 1906 until his death in 1935 our previous owner John R. Menzies was chairman of John Menzies & Co. founded in Edinburgh in 1833 by his father. The firm sold books magazines and newspapers becoming with W. H.
