This catalog was prepared to accompany the exhibition at the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum in Tokyo from June 27 to September 6 2015. The exhibition explored the relationship between Kyosai 1831- 1889 and Josiah Condor 1852- 1920. Josiah Condor was a British architect who was hired by the Meiji Japanese government as a professor of architecture for the Imperial College of Engineering and became architect of Japan's Public Works. He was a controversial figure in Japan because his teaching involved instructing young Japanese architects about the architecture in England and Europe. He was a prolific lecturer and author. One of his most important books in the west was "Landscape Gardening in Japan" 1893. Kyosai was also a controversial figure in Japan and ran afoul of the authorities many times. Kyosai is considered by many to be the greatest successor of Hokusai of whom however he was not a pupil as well as the first political caricaturist of Japan. Illustrated mostly in color.
